Translation

✧ The Poetry of Rizāḥ in Support of Quṣayy and Quṣayy's Response Ibn Isḥāq said: When Quṣayy had finished his war, his brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah departed to his own lands with those of his people who were with him, and Rizāḥ said regarding his answering Quṣayy: : When a messenger came from Quṣayy, and the messenger said: 'Answer the friend,' We arose to him, driving the steeds, And we cast off from ourselves the weary, heavy one. We journeyed with them through the night until morning, And we concealed the day lest we halt. They are swift as the arrival of sand-grouse; They carry us to answer a messenger from Quṣayy. We gathered from the secret place from Ashmadhayn, And from every tribe we gathered a clan. What a night for you! A great affair, It adds to a thousand, a stream flowing. When we passed by ʿAsjad, And descended from Mustanākh on a clear way, And crossed by the corner from Warqān, And crossed by al-ʿArj, a tribe dwelling, We passed by the camp but did not taste it, And we struggled through Marr for a long night. We bring near the foals to the nursing camels, Desiring that they might listen for the neighing. When we reached Makkah, We made the men lawful, tribe by tribe. We exchanged with them then the edge of swords, And in every return we snatched away the minds. We baked them with the hardness of vultures, The baking of the strong, the mighty, the humiliated. We killed Khuzāʿah in their abode, And Bakr we killed, and generation after generation. We expelled them from the lands of the King, As they shall not dwell in lowland lands. Their captives became in iron, And from every tribe we quenched the thirst for vengeance. And Thaʿlabah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhubyān b. al-Ḥārith b. Saʿd Hudhaym al-Quḍāʿī said concerning that matter of Quṣayy when he summoned them and they answered him: : We brought the horses, lean and costly, From al-Aʿrāf, the borders of al-Jināb, To the lowlands of Tihāmah, and we met On the desert plain in an empty, desolate floor. As for Ṣūfah the effeminate, they abandoned Their dwellings in fear of the striking. And the Banū ʿAlī, when they saw us, Rose to the swords like camels yearning for their young. And Quṣayy b. Kilāb said: : I am the son of the protectors, Banū Luʾayy; In Makkah is my abode, and there I was raised. To al-Baṭḥāʾ, Maʿadd has known, And its Marwah, I was pleased with it; I am pleased. I am not of Ghālib if there do not become firmly established In it the descendants of Qaydhar and al-Nabīt. Rizāḥ is my helper, and through him I am named; I do not fear injustice as long as I live.
