Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

Translation

✧ The Day of al-Shayyiṭayn Abū ʿUbaydah said: al-Shayṭān belonged to Bakr b. Wāʾil. When Islam appeared in Najd, Bakr marched toward the Sawād, while Muqāyis b. ʿAmr al-ʿĀʾidhī b. ʿĀʾidhah of Quraysh, an ally of Banū Shaybān, remained at al-Shayyiṭayn. When Bakr stayed in the Sawād, the epidemic and plague that occurred in the days of Kisrā Shīrawayh overtook them, so they returned fleeing and encamped at Laʿlaʿ, which was barren, while al-Shayyiṭān had become fertile. Tamīm then marched and encamped there. News of al-Shayyiṭayn reached Bakr, so they gathered and said: We shall raid Tamīm, for in the religion of Ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib—meaning the Prophet—whoever kills a soul is killed for it. So we shall make this raid and then embrace Islam after it. They departed from Laʿlaʿ with their womenfolk and wealth, their leader being Bishr b. Masʿūd b. Qays b. Khālid, and they reached al-Shayyiṭayn in four nights, though the distance between the two places is a journey of eight nights. They outpaced every report until they fell upon them at dawn while they were unaware. They fought a fierce battle, and Tamīm held firm, then were routed. Rashīd b. Rumayḍ al-ʿAnbarī said, boasting of that: Between al-Shayyiṭayn and Laʿlaʿ for our women there were only four stages' crossings. We came with a host the like of which people had not seen, whose back the mountain-pass of al-Warīʿah nearly buckles under; with a heavy, dark mass amid which the piebald horses glide, with a flank in which death gleams. At dawn we fell upon Saʿd, ʿAmr, and Mālik, and a day of evil most hideous remained for them. And one of noble stock from the people of Ḍabbah they left in a run like the run of a startled weaned camel. Yarbūʿ shrinks into the center of our land, but for Yarbūʿ there is no place to shrink. Then the Prophet ﷺ wrote to Bakr b. Wāʾil concerning what was in their hands. (al-Shayyiṭān: with unpointed sh, doubled yāʾ with two dots below, unpointed ṭ, and ending in nūn).
