✧ [ Poetry of Rizāḥ in support of Quṣayy and Quṣayy's reply to him ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When Quṣayy had finished his war, his brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah returned to his own land with those of his people who were with him, and Rizāḥ said in answer to Quṣayy: : When the messenger of Quṣayy came, the messenger said: “Answer the friend.” We rose to him, leading the steeds, And cast off from us the weary and heavy one. We journeyed with them through the night until morning, And concealed ourselves by day lest we halt. They are swift as the coming to water of the qaṭā; They answer with us the messenger of Quṣayy. We gathered from the secret from Ashmadhayn, And from every tribe we gathered a clan. Oh what a muster was that night, Exceeding a thousand in bounty and in comeliness! And when we passed by ʿAsjad, And descended from Mustanākh a way, and passed by al-Rukn from Warqān, And passed by al-ʿArj with a tribe dwelling there, we passed by al-Ḥill, we did not taste it, And we traversed from Marr a long night. We bring near to the mares their foals, Desiring that they steal the neighing. And when we reached Makkah, We permitted the men, tribe after tribe. We returned to them, then the edge of the swords, And in every return we snatched away the reason. We baked them with the hardness of the vultures’ heads, The baking of the strong, the mighty, and the lowly. We killed Khuzāʿah in their abode, And Bakr we killed, and generation after generation. We banished them from the lands of the King, As they shall not dwell in a land of ease. And their captives became in iron, And from every tribe we quenched the thirst for vengeance. And Thaʿlabah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhubyān b. al-Ḥārith b. Saʿd Hudhaym al-Quḍāʿī said concerning that matter of Quṣayy, when he called them and they answered him: : We brought the horses, lean and covered with sweat, from al-Aʿrāf, the borders of al-Jināb, To the lowlands of Tihāmah; then we met from al-Fayfāʾ in a barren plain. As for Ṣūfah al-Khunthā, they left their dwellings in fear of the blows. And Banū ʿAlī, when they saw us, rose to the swords like camels excited by song. And Quṣayy b. Kilāb said: : I am the son of those who protected Banū Luʾayy; in Makkah is my dwelling, and in it I was raised. To al-Baṭḥāʾ—Maʿadd knows it—and its Marwah, I am pleased with it, I am pleased. I am not of Ghālib if there do not become firmly established therein the sons of Qaydhar and al-Nabīt. Rizāḥ is my helper, and by him I am named; so I do not fear wrong as long as I live. [ Those who entered the alliance of al-Muṭayyabūn ] Banū ʿAbd Manāf brought out a bowl full of perfume. They assert that one of the women of Banū ʿAbd Manāf brought it out for them, and they placed it for their allies in the mosque near the Kaʿbah. Then the people dipped their hands into it and made a covenant and a pact, they and their allies; then they wiped the Kaʿbah with their hands as a confirmation upon themselves. So they were called al-Muṭayyabūn. [ Those who entered the alliance of al-Aḥlāf ] And Banū ʿAbd al-Dār made a covenant and a pact, they and their allies, at the Kaʿbah, a binding alliance, that they would not abandon one another nor hand over any of them. So they were called al-Aḥlāf. [ The arrangement of the tribes for war ] Then the tribes were matched against one another, and some were joined to others: Banū ʿAbd Manāf were arrayed against Banū Sahm; Banū Asad were arrayed against Banū ʿAbd al-Dār; Zuhrah was arrayed against Banū Jumaḥ; Banū Taym were arrayed against Banū Makhzūm; and Banū al-Ḥārith b. Fihr were arrayed against Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb. Then they said: “Let every tribe be annihilated by those arrayed against it.” [ What the people agreed upon in peace ] While the people were in that state, having resolved upon war, they called one another to peace, on condition that they give Banū ʿAbd Manāf the siqāyah and the rifādah, and that the ḥijābah, the liwāʾ, and the nadwah belong to Banū ʿAbd al-Dār as they had been. They did so, and each of the two parties was satisfied with that. The people restrained one another from war, and each group remained with those with whom they had allied, and they continued in that state until God Almighty brought Islam. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Whatever alliance there was in the Jāhiliyyah, Islam only increased it in strength.”
