Translation
✧ The Day of Falj Abū ʿUbaydah said: This is a day belonging to Bakr b. Wāʾil against Banū Tamīm. Its cause was that a group of Bakr set out to al-Ṣiʿāb and spent the winter there. When spring ended, they turned back and passed through al-Daww, where they met people of Banū Tamīm, of Banū ʿAmr and Ḥanẓalah, and raided many camels of theirs and went on. The alarm came to Banū ʿAmr and Ḥanẓalah, and they called on their people for help and set out in pursuit of Bakr b. Wāʾil. They traveled for two days and two nights until the march exhausted them, and they descended into the hollow of Falj. They had left two men behind on two swift horses as lookouts to inform them of their news if anyone marched against them. When Tamīm reached the two men, they spurred their horses and traveled hard and warned their people. The alarm of Tamīm's march came to them just as they arrived at Falj. Ḥanẓalah b. Yasār al-ʿIjlī struck his tent and dismounted, and the people dismounted with him and prepared for battle with him. Banū Tamīm caught up, and Bakr b. Wāʾil fought them a fierce battle. ʿArfajah b. Buḥayr al-ʿIjlī charged Khālid b. Mālik b. Salamah al-Tamīmī, thrust at him, and took him prisoner. Ribʿī b. Mālik b. Salamah was killed in the battle. Tamīm was routed, and Bakr b. Wāʾil attained from them what they wanted. Then ʿArfajah released Khālid b. Mālik and cut off his forelock. Khālid said: We found the support, the support of Banū Lujaym, when supports were few, to increase. They are the ones who pitched the tents in the hollow of Falj and defended their sacred things with defense. They bestowed favor upon me and released me, though I had complied with being led by the halter. Are they not the best of those who mount riding camels, and the greatest of them in ash when they gather? Are they not the pillars of the tribe, Bakr, when they alight, veiled in hardship? And Qays b. ʿĀṣim said, reproaching Khālid: If you were free, O son of Sulmā b. Jandal, you would have risen and not aimed at Sulmā b. Jandal. What is the matter with echoes at Falj, strange, calling with the ruins: O for Ibn Ḥanẓal! Thirsty ones, with no mighty patron to answer them, and no family to water their echo at a watering place. You left Ribʿī at Falj gashed, and came in the foremost of the hastening vanguard. You flee from fear of death — may you not be spared it — as the dust-colored one attained from the fate of a hawk. He reproaches him for not avenging his brother Ribʿī and those killed with him on the day of Falj, and he says that their echoes call out while no one waters them, according to the way of the Jāhiliyyah. Were it not for lengthiness, we would have explained it more clearly than this.
