Translation

✧ The Day of al-Nibāj and Thaytal Abū ʿUbaydah said: Qays b. ʿĀṣim al-Minqarī, then al-Tamīmī, raided with Muqāʿis—they are clans of Tamīm, namely Ṣarīm, Rabīʿ, and ʿUbayd, the sons of al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd—and with him Salamah b. Ẓarib al-Ḥimmānī raided among al-Ḥārith—they are also clans of Tamīm, namely Ḥimmān, Rabīʿah, Mālik, and al-Aʿraj, the sons of Kaʿb b. Saʿd—and they raided Bakr b. Wāʾil. They found al-Lahāzim—they are Banū Qays and Taym al-Lāt, the sons of Thaʿlabah b. ʿUkābah b. Ṣaʿb b. ʿAlī b. Bakr b. Wāʾil—and with them Banū Dhuhl b. Thaʿlabah, ʿIjl b. Lujaym, and ʿAnazah b. Asad b. Rabīʿah at al-Nibāj and Thaytal, and between the two places is a morning's journey. Qays raided al-Nibāj, and Salamah went on to Thaytal to raid those who were there. When Qays reached al-Nibāj, he watered his horses, then poured out the water they had with them, and said to those with him: Fight, for death is before you and the waterless desert is behind you. He raided those of Bakr who were there at dawn, and they fought them a severe fight. Bakr was defeated, and such of their spoils were taken as cannot be counted for abundance. When Qays had finished the plundering, he returned quickly to Salamah and those with him toward Thaytal and caught up with them, but Salamah had not raided those who were there. So Qays raided them too, and they fought him and were defeated, and he obtained spoils similar to what he had obtained at al-Nibāj. Then Salamah came and said: You have raided what belonged to me. They disputed until evil was about to fall between them; then they agreed to hand over the spoils to him. About that Rabīʿah b. Ṭarīf says: May God not make you remote, Qays b. ʿĀṣim, for you are to us a mighty strength and a refuge; and you are the one who made war on Bakr b. Wāʾil, when al-Nibāj and Thaytal were made difficult for them. And Qurrah b. Zayd b. ʿĀṣim said: I am the son of the one who split the water-skins when he had seen at Thaytal the clans of al-Lahāzim assembled. Qays b. ʿĀṣim came upon them at dawn with the army, and they found no way out but the spear-points. Qays b. ʿĀṣim gave them poison to drink with them; and when he brought a matter to water, he brought it back. Upon short-haired horses champing the bit, grim-faced, when the water streamed down from their flanks. The onlookers saw them only as a sudden surprise, raising dust like dark smoke. And Ḥumrān—our lances delivered him to us— so he struggled in fetters on his arms, a brown captive.
