Translation

✧ The Day of Ṭikhfah It belongs to Banū Yarbūʿ against the armies of al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir. Abū ʿUbaydah said: The cause of this war was that the ridāfah, which is in the position of a vizierate, and the radīf used to sit at the king's right hand, belonged to Banū Yarbūʿ of Tamīm, who inherited it from elder to younger. When it was the days of al-Nuʿmān, and it was said the days of his son al-Mundhir, Ḥājib b. Zurārah al-Dārimī al-Tamīmī asked al-Nuʿmān to grant it to al-Ḥārith b. Baybah b. Qurṭ b. Sufyān b. Mujāshiʿ al-Dārimī al-Tamīmī. So al-Nuʿmān spoke to Banū Yarbūʿ about this, and asked them to agree to that, but they refused. Their dwelling was at the lower part of Ṭikhfah. When they refused that, al-Nuʿmān sent against them Qābūs his son and Ḥassān his brother, the two sons of al-Mundhir, with Qābūs over the people and Ḥassān over the vanguard, and he attached to them a dense army, among whom were the ṣanāʾiʿ and the waḍāʾiʿ and people from Tamīm and others. They marched until they came to Ṭikhfah, and they and Yarbūʿ met and fought. Yarbūʿ stood firm, and Qābūs and those with him were routed. Ṭāriq Abū ʿAmīrah struck the horse of Qābūs and hamstrung it and captured him, and he wanted to cut off his forelock, but he said: "Kings' forelocks are not cut," so he released him. As for Ḥassān, Bishr b. ʿAmr b. Juwayn captured him, but he showed him favor and released him. So the routed ones returned to al-Nuʿmān. Shihāb b. Qays b. Kiyās al-Yarbūʿī was with the king, so he said to him: "O Shihāb, rescue my son and my brother. If you find them alive, then Banū Yarbūʿ shall have their judgment, and I will restore to them their ridāfah, and leave to them those they killed and what they plundered, and I will give them two thousand camels." So Shihāb set out and found the two of them alive, and he released them. The king fulfilled for Banū Yarbūʿ what he had said, and he did not oppose them in their ridāfah. Mālik b. Nuwayrah said: We hamstrung the colt of Qābūs after the people saw from it death while the horses were panting; Upon him was a coat of mail of woven rings, and his sword was a sharp Indian blade, white and cutting. By that we sought it; indeed we are those who attain its attainment when the distant, far-reaching goal is sought.
