Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
يَوْمُ ذِي طُلُوحٍ وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الصَّمْدِ وَيَوْمُ أُودٍ أَيْضًا، وَهُوَ بَيْنَ بَكْرٍ وَتَمِيمٍ، وَكَانَ مِنْ حَدِيثِهِ أَنَّ عَمِيرَةَ بْنَ طَارِقِ بْنِ أَرْثَمَ الْيَرْبُوعِيَّ التَّمِيمِيَّ تَزَوَّجَ مُرِّيَّةَ بِنْتَ جَابِرٍ الْعِجْلِيَّ أُخْتَ أَبْجَرَ، وَسَارَ إِلَى عِجْلٍ لِيَبْتَنِيَ بِأَهْلِهِ. وَكَانَ لَهُ فِي بَنِي تَمِيمٍ امْرَأَةٌ أُخْرَى تُعْرَفُ بِابْنَةِ النَّطِفِ مِنْ بَنِي تَمِيمٍ، فَأَتَى أَبْجَرُ أُخْتَهُ يَزُورُهَا وَزَوْجُهَا عِنْدَهَا. فَقَالَ لَهَا أَبْجَرُ: إِنِّي لَأَرْجُو أَنْ آتِيَكِ يَا ابْنَةَ النَّطِفِ امْرَأَةَ عَمِيرَةَ. فَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا أَرَاكَ تُبْقِي عَلَيَّ حَتَّى تَسْلُبَنِي أَهْلِي. فَنَدِمَ أَبْجَرُ وَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا كُنْتُ لِأَغْزُوَ قَوْمَكَ وَلَكِنَّنِي مُسْتَأْسِرٌ فِي هَذَا الْحَيِّ مِنْ تَمِيمٍ. وَجَمَعَ أَبْجَرُ وَالْحَوْفَزَانُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ الشَّيْبَانِيُّ، وَالْحَوْفَزَانُ عَلَى شَيْبَانَ وَالْأَبْجَرُ عَلَى اللَّهَازِمِ، وَوَكَّلَا بِعَمِيرَةَ مَنْ يَحْرُسُهُ لِئَلَّا يَأْتِيَ قَوْمَهُ فَيُنْذِرَهُمْ. فَسَارَ الْجَيْشُ، فَاحْتَالَ عَمِيرَةُ عَلَى الْمُوَكَّلِ بِحِفْظِهِ وَهَرَبَ مِنْهُ وَجَدَّ السَّيْرَ إِلَى أَنْ وَصَلَ إِلَى بَنِي يَرْبُوعٍ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: قَدْ غَزَاكُمُ الْجَيْشُ مِنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ، فَأَعْلَمُوا بَنِي ثَعْلَبَةَ بَطْنًا مِنْهُمْ، فَأَرْسَلُوا طَلِيعَةً مِنْهُمْ فَبَقُوا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ، وَوَصَلَتْ بَكْرٌ فَرَكِبَتْ يَرْبُوعٌ وَالْتَقَوْا بِذِي طُلُوحٍ. فَرَكِبَ عَمِيرَةُ وَلَقِيَ أَبْجَرَ فَعَرَّفَهُ نَفْسَهُ، وَالْتَقَى الْقَوْمُ وَاقْتَتَلُوا فَكَانَ الظَّفَرُ لِيَرْبُوعٍ. وَانْهَزَمَتْ بَكْرٌ وَأُسِرَ الْحَوْفَزَانُ وَابْنُهُ شَرِيكٌ وَابْنُ عَنَمَةَ الشَّاعِرُ، وَكَانَ مَعَ بَنِي شَيْبَانَ فَافْتَكَّهُ مُتَمِّمُ بْنُ نُوَيْرَةَ، وَأُسِرَ أَكْثَرُ الْجَيْشِ الْبَكْرِيِّ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَنَمَةَ يَشْكُرُ مُتَمِّمًا: جَزَى اللَّهُ رَبُّ النَّاسِ عَنِّي مُتَمِّمًا بِخَيْرِ الْجَزَاءِ مَا أَعَفَّ وَأَجْوَدَا أُجِيرَتْ بِهِ أَبْنَاؤُنَا وَدِمَاؤُنَا وَشَارَكَ فِي إِطْلَاقِنَا وَتَفَرَّدَا أَبَا نَهْشَلٍ إِنِّي لَكُمْ غَيْرُ كَافِرٍ وَلَا جَاعِلٍ مِنْ دُونِكَ الْمَالَ سَرْمَدَا
Translation
✧ The Day of Dhū Ṭulūḥ It is also the Day of al-Ṣamad and the Day of Ūd. It was between Bakr and Tamīm. One account of it is that ʿUmayrah b. Ṭāriq b. Artham al-Yarbūʿī al-Tamīmī married Murriyyah bt. Jābir al-ʿIjlī, the sister of Abjar, and set out to ʿIjl to consummate with his wife. He had another wife among Banū Tamīm known as Ibnat al-Naṭif of Banū Tamīm. Abjar came to visit his sister while her husband was with her. Abjar said to her: "I hope to bring you, O Ibnat al-Naṭif, the wife of ʿUmayrah." He said to him: "I do not think you would leave me alive until you rob me of my wife." Abjar regretted it and said to him: "I would not raid your people, but I am being taken captive in this quarter of Tamīm." Abjar and al-Ḥawfazān b. Sharīk al-Shaybānī gathered forces, al-Ḥawfazān leading Shaybān and al-Abjar leading al-Lahāzim, and they appointed someone to guard ʿUmayrah so that he would not come to his people and warn them. The army marched. ʿUmayrah tricked the one assigned to guard him, escaped from him, traveled hard until he reached Banū Yarbūʿ, and said to them: "An army from Bakr b. Wāʾil has raided you, so inform Banū Thaʿlabah, a clan of them." They sent a scouting party from among them, and they remained for three days. Bakr arrived, and Yarbūʿ mounted. They met at Dhū Ṭulūḥ. ʿUmayrah mounted, met Abjar, and made himself known to him. The people met and fought, and victory was Yarbūʿ's. Bakr was routed, and al-Ḥawfazān, his son Sharīk, and Ibn ʿAnamah the poet were taken captive. He was with Banū Shaybān, and Mutammim b. Nuwayrah ransomed him. Most of the Bakrī army was taken captive. Ibn ʿAnamah said, thanking Mutammim: May God, Lord of mankind, reward Mutammim on my behalf With the best of rewards, how chaste and generous he was By him our sons and our blood were protected And he shared in our release and was alone Abā Nahshal, I am not ungrateful to you Nor will I make wealth everlasting apart from you
