Translation

✧ The Day of al-Yaḥāmīm, also known as Qārāt Ḥawq It was between the tribes of Ṭayyiʾ, one part against another. The reason for that was that al-Ḥārith b. Jabalah al-Ghassānī had made peace among Ṭayyiʾ. When he perished, they returned to their war, and Jadīlah and al-Ghawth met at a place called Gharthān. The leader of Banū Jadīlah, who was Asbaʿ b. ʿAmr b. Laʾm, the paternal uncle of Aws b. Khālid b. Ḥārithah b. Laʾm, was killed. A man from Sinbis called Muṣʿab took his two ears and used them to patch his sandals. About that Abū Sarwah al-Sinbisī says: We patch our sandals with ears from you, and we drink unwillingly from you in skulls. The two clans exchanged many poems about that, and what al-Ghawth did to Aws b. Khālid b. Laʾm became a grave matter. He resolved to meet the war in person, though he had not witnessed the earlier wars, nor had any of the chiefs of Ṭayyiʾ such as Ḥātim b. ʿAbd Allāh, Zayd al-Khayl and others of the chiefs. When Aws prepared for war and began gathering and assembling Jadīlah, Abū Jābir said: Set the middle course upon us, O family of Ṭayyiʾ, or else knowledge is in the settling of accounts. For who is like us when war girds itself, and who is like us on a day when we do not settle accounts? If you cut me off or desire my harm, then terror, the dreaded, has already cut off my riding camels. The news of Aws gathering her reached al-Ghawth, and the fire was lit on Manāʿ, which is the summit of Ajaʾ. That was the first day a fire was lit upon it. The tribes of al-Ghawth came, each tribe with its chief, among them Zayd al-Khayl and Ḥātim, and Jadīlah came gathered under Aws b. Ḥārithah b. Laʾm. Aws swore that he would not turn away from Ṭayyiʾ until he descended with her upon her two mountains, Ajaʾ and Salmā, and her people paid tribute to him. They advanced and met at Qārāt Ḥawq under their banners, and they fought a severe battle. The war turned against Banū Kibād b. Jundab and they were annihilated. ʿAdī b. Ḥātim said: I was standing on the Day of al-Yaḥāmīm while the people were fighting, when I looked at Zayd al-Khayl, who had placed his two sons Miknaf and Ḥurayth in a ravine that had no exit, and he was saying: O my two sons, spare your people, for today is the day of mutual destruction. If these are paternal uncles, then those are maternal uncles. I said: It is as though you dislike fighting your maternal uncles! He said: Then his eyes reddened with anger, and he stretched toward me until I saw what was beneath him of his saddle, and I feared him, so I struck my horse and drew away from him. He became distracted from his two sons by looking at me, and they came out like two falcons. Qays b. ʿĀzib charged at Buḥayr b. Zayd al-Khayl b. Ḥārithah b. Laʾm and struck him on the head with a blow that made Buḥayr spur his horse and turn away. Jadīlah was defeated then, and there was a great slaughter among them. Zayd al-Khayl said: Banū Laʾm come with steeds as if they were bands of birds on a day of light rain and wind-driven dust. If you escape from them, a mark will not cease to accompany you, the groan of a living man between the windpipe and the collarbones. Ibn Laʾm fled and shielded himself from us with his back, while Qays b. ʿĀzib drove him back with the spear. Banū Maʿn came as if their swords were lamps from a roof, so there is no returning. He did not flee until Ibn Ḥumāris surrendered to the blow of a polished, sharp-cutting white sword. After the Day of al-Yaḥāmīm, no remnant of Jadīlah remained fit for war. They entered the lands of Kalb, made an alliance with them, and stayed with them.
