Translation

✧ The Day of al-Marrūt It was a day between Tamīm and ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah. Its cause was that Qaʿnab b. ʿAttāb al-Riyāḥī and Baḥīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Salamah al-ʿĀmirī met at ʿUkāẓ, and Baḥīr said to Qaʿnab: “What has become of your white mare?” He said: “She is with me, and what is your asking about her?” He said: “Because she saved you from such-and-such a day.” Qaʿnab denied that, and they cursed each other and called upon one another that God make the death of the liar be at the hand of the truthful one. They remained as long as God willed. Baḥīr gathered Banū ʿĀmir and marched with them and raided Banū al-ʿAnbar b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm at Iram al-Kalbah while they were left behind (without their fighting men), and he drove off the captives and the cattle without meeting severe fighting. The cry for help came to Banū al-ʿAnbar b. ʿAmr b. Tamīm, Banū Mālik b. Ḥanẓalah b. Mālik b. Zayd Manāt b. Tamīm, and Banū Yarbūʿ b. Ḥanẓalah, so they mounted in pursuit, and ʿAmr b. Tamīm went ahead. When Baḥīr reached al-Marrūt he said: “O Banū ʿĀmir, look — do you see anything?” They said: “We see horsemen holding their spears crosswise on the withers of their horses.” He said: “This is ʿAmr b. Tamīm, and it is nothing.” Banū ʿAmr caught up with them and fought them a little, then withdrew from them, and Baḥīr went on. Then he said: “O Banū ʿĀmir, look — do you see anything?” They said: “We see horsemen with their spears upright.” He said: “This is Mālik b. Ḥanẓalah, and it is nothing.” They were caught up and fought a little, then withdrew from them, and Baḥīr went on and said: “O Banū ʿĀmir, look — do you see anything?” They said: “We see horsemen who have no spears with them, and it is as though boys are upon them.” He said: “This is Yarbūʿ — their spears are between the ears of their horses. Beware of swift death, and be patient, and I do not think you will escape.” The first of Banū Yarbūʿ to catch up was al-Wāqiʿah, who was Nuʿaym b. ʿAttāb, and he was called al-Wāqiʿah because of his calamity. He charged al-Muthallam al-Qushayrī and took him captive. Qushayr charged Dawkas b. Wāqid b. Ḥawṭ and killed him. Nuʿaym took al-Muṣaffā al-Qushayrī captive and killed him. Kidām b. Bajīlah al-Māzinī charged Baḥīr and grappled with him. Qaʿnab had no concern except Baḥīr, and he looked at him and Kidām grappling each other, so he came toward them. Kidām said: “O Qaʿnab, he is my captive.” Qaʿnab said: “Māzi, your head and the sword,” meaning “O Māzinī.” Kidām released him, and Qaʿnab charged him and struck him and killed him. Qaʿnab also charged Ṣuhbān, whose mother was a Māzinī woman, and took him captive. Banū Māzin said: “O Qaʿnab, you have killed our captive, so give us our nephew in his place.” He handed Ṣuhbān over to them in exchange for Baḥīr, and they accepted that. Banū Yarbūʿ recovered the property of Banū al-ʿAnbar and their captives from Banū ʿĀmir, and they returned. ( Baḥīr: with fatḥah on the undotted bāʾ, and kasrah on the undotted ḥāʾ. )
