Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ The Day of al-Waqīṭ Its account is that the Lahāzim gathered—namely Qays and Taym al-Lāt, the two sons of Thaʿlabah b. ʿUkābah b. Ṣaʿb b. ʿAlī b. Bakr b. Wāʾil—and with them ʿIjl b. Lujaym and ʿAnazah b. Asad b. Rabīʿah b. Nizār, to raid Banū Tamīm while they were off guard. Al-Aʿwar saw that—he was Nāshib b. Bashāmah al-ʿAnbarī, and he was a captive among Qays b. Thaʿlabah—so he said to them: Give me a man whom I may send to my family to instruct them regarding some of my needs. They said to him: You would send him while we are present? He said: Yes. They brought him a slave born among them, and he said: You have brought me a fool! The slave said: By God, I am no fool! He said: I see you are mad! He said: By God, there is no madness in me! He said: Do you understand? He said: Yes, indeed I understand. He said: Are fires more numerous or the stars? He said: The stars, and all are many. Then he filled his palm with sand and said: How much is in my palm? He said: I do not know, for it is many. Then he pointed with his hand to the sun and said: What is that? He said: The sun. He said: I see you are only sensible. Go to my people and convey to them greetings of peace, and say to them: Treat your captive well, for I am among a people who treat me well and honor me. And say to them: Let them strip my red camel, and mount my white she-camel, and let them pasture my need among Banū Mālik. And inform them that the ʿawsaj has put forth leaves, and that the women have complained, and let them disobey Hammām b. Bashāmah, for he is ill-omened and deprived of good, and let them obey Hudhayl b. al-Akhnas, for he is resolute and fortunate. And ask al-Ḥārith about my news. The messenger set out and came to his people and conveyed it to them, but they did not grasp what he meant. So they brought al-Ḥārith and related to him the messenger's report. He said to the messenger: Relate to me your story from the beginning. So he related to him from the first of what he had said to him until he came to its end. He said: Convey to him greeting and peace, and tell him that we take good care of him. Then the messenger returned, and he said to Banū al-ʿAnbar: Your companion has made things clear to you. As for the sand he placed in his palm, he tells you that a number beyond counting has come upon you. As for the sun he pointed to, he says that this is clearer than the sun. As for his red camel, it is al-Ṣammān: he commands you to strip it, meaning to depart from it. As for his white she-camel, he commands you to be on your guard in al-Dahnāʾ. As for Banū Mālik, he commands you to warn them along with you. As for the leafing of the ʿawsaj, the people have donned their weapons. As for the complaining of the women, he means that the women have stitched the shikāʾ, which are water skins for raiding. So Banū al-ʿAnbar were on their guard and traveled through al-Dahnāʾ and warned Banū Mālik, but they did not accept it from them. Then the Lahāzim, ʿIjl, and ʿAnazah came to Banū Ḥanẓalah and found that ʿAmr had departed, so they fell upon Banū Dārim at al-Waqīṭ, and they fought fiercely, and the war between them grew great. Rabīʿah captured a group of the chiefs of Banū Tamīm, among them Ḍirār b. al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Maʿbad b. Zurārah: they cut his forelock and released him. They also captured ʿAthjal b. al-Maʾmūn b. Zurārah and Juwayrah b. Badr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Dārim. He remained in bonds until one day he saw them drinking, and he began to sing, letting them hear what he said: A woman may say: What kept him from visiting us, when I had been kept from that visit by occupation; And misfortunes are many, while the claws of a people—not weak nor weaponless—have seized me, Swift to the great affair, slow to baseness, steadfast at the assembly, generous in what is no folly. Perhaps they will shower me with favor, as the rain-cloud's water is sweet in the barren land. God may revive a youth after humiliation, and the nobles of Banū ʿIjl may build the finest deed. When they heard the verses, they released him. Also captured were Nuʿaym and ʿAwf, the two sons of al-Qaʿqāʿ b. Maʿbad b. Zurārah, and others among the lords of Banū Tamīm. Ḥakīm b. Jadhīmah b. al-Uṣayliʿ al-Nahshalī was killed, and no one from Nahshal witnessed it other than he. Bakr then returned and passed on its way after the battle by three men of Banū al-ʿAnbar who had not departed with their people. When they saw them, they drove their camels and secured them from Bakr. The poets composed much about this day. Among that is the saying of Abū Muhwash al-Faqʿasī, taunting Tamīm about the Day of al-Waqīṭ: Nahshal did not fight on the day of the two Waqīṭs, nor did the ill-omened, hard-pressed Fuqaym b. Dārim; ʿAwf did not cut the men of Mujāshiʿ, nor did anyone flay the buttocks except al-Barājim. And Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿAmr b. Khālid b. Maḥmūd b. ʿAmr b. Marthad said: Tamīm scratched its chest when our banners met, like the swooping of eagles; They overwhelmed al-Waqīṭ with a host abundant in battle, and its lances like the drawing of well-ropes.
