Translation

✧ The Day of al-Nisār Al-Nisār: adjacent mountains, and at them the battle took place, and it is a place well known to them. The reason for that day was that Banū Tamīm b. Murr b. Udd used to raid their paternal uncles Ḍabbah b. Udd and Banū ʿAbd Manāh b. Udd, and Ḍabbah seized a group of Tamīm. Then Tamīm sought them, and the group of al-Ribāb withdrew—they are Taym, ʿAdī, Thawr Aṭḥal, and ʿUkl, the Banū ʿAbd Manāh b. Udd and Ḍabbah b. Udd. They were called al-Ribāb only because they dipped their hands in juice (al-rubb) when they formed an alliance. They joined Banū Asad, and at that time they were allies of Banū Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ. Then a crier of Ḍabbah called out: “O people of Khindif!” and Banū Asad answered them. It was the first day on which Ḍabbah became Khindifī, and they sought reinforcement from their allies Ṭayyiʾ and Ghaṭafān. The chief of Asad on the Day of al-Nisār was ʿAwf b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Jadhīmah b. Naṣr b. Qaʿīn, and it is said: Khālid b. Naḍlah. The chief of al-Ribāb was al-Aswad b. al-Mundhir, brother of al-Nuʿmān, but this is not sound. Over the whole group was Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr, and about him Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā says: And who is like Ḥiṣn in wars, and like him for repelling wrong or for a matter he undertakes? When the clans of the confederates encamp around him at Dhū Najab, with its clamor and neighing. When that reached Banū Tamīm, they sought reinforcement from Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and they reinforced them. Ḥājib b. Zurārah was over Banū Tamīm, and over ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah was Jawwāb, which is the nickname of Mālik b. Kaʿb of the Banū Abī Bakr b. Kilāb, because Banū Jaʿfar—Jawwāb had expelled them to Banū al-Ḥārith b. Kaʿb, and they became their allies. It is said: the chief of ʿĀmir was Shurayḥ b. Mālik al-Qushayrī. The two hosts marched and met at al-Nisār and fought. ʿĀmir stood firm, and slaughter consumed them; Tamīm scattered and escaped, and not many of them were struck. Shurayḥ al-Qushayrī, the head of Banū ʿĀmir, was killed, and ʿUbayd b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Kilāb and others besides them were killed. A number of noble women of Banū ʿĀmir were taken captive, among them Salmā bt. al-Mukhallaf and al-ʿAnqāʾ bt. Hammām and others besides them. Salmā said, taunting Jawwāb and al-Ṭufayl: May God curse Abā Laylā for his flight on the Day of al-Nisār, and the sheath of the stallion’s penis belongs to Jawwāb. How can there be boasting when at the battlefield on the Day of al-Nisār Banū Dhubyān were lords? You did not protect the people when they drove off your cattle, nor the women, while the people were raiders. And a man said, taunting Jawwāb and al-Ṭufayl for his flight from his two wives: He shielded the face of a defecating woman from his two co-wives, and Mālik fled—the sheath of the stallion’s penis is Jawwāb. Al-qunb is the sheath of the penis. Jawwāb is a nickname because he used to trace tracks, and his name is Mālik. Bishr b. Abī Khāzim said about the defeat of Ḥājib: Ḥājib escaped the thrusts of the spearheads on a sorrel mare that gleamed in the mirage. Had they caught the head of Banū Tamīm, they would have rubbed his face in the dust. The Day of al-Nisār was after the Day of Jabalah and the killing of Laqīṭ b. Zurārah. (Jawwāb: with fatḥah on the jīm, shaddah on the wāw, and ending with a univalent bāʾ; Khāzim: with dotted khāʾ and zāy).
