Translation

✧ The Day of al-Jifār When the head of the year came around from the Day of al-Nisār, those of the Arabs who had witnessed al-Nisār gathered together, and their leaders at al-Jifār were the same leaders who had been at the Day of al-Nisār, except that it is said that the leader of Banū ʿĀmir at al-Jifār was ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿdah b. Kaʿb b. Rabīʿah. They met at al-Jifār and fought one another, and Tamīm held firm, so the killing became great among them, especially among Banū ʿAmr b. Tamīm. The Day of al-Jifār was called al-Ṣaylam because of the great number of those killed in it. Bishr b. Abī Khāzim said concerning the band of Tamīm to Banū ʿĀmir: Tamīm became angry that ʿĀmir should be killed on the Day of al-Nisār, so they requited it with al-Ṣaylam. Whenever they set out in a raid for war, we cure their headache with a hard, solid head. We climb over the horsemen with our swords and assert our lineage, while the horses' chests are aflame with blood. They come out from the gaps in the dust frowning, at the trot of wild beasts, with every bold, fierce lion. These are several verses. He also said: The Day of al-Jifār and the Day of al-Nisār were both a torment and both a lasting penalty. As for Tamīm, Tamīm b. Murr, the people found them drowsy, asleep. And as for Banū ʿĀmir at al-Jifār and the Day of al-Nisār, they were like ostriches. When Bishr spoke at length against Banū Tamīm, it was said to him: "What is it between you and Tamīm, when they are the closest of people to you in kinship?" He said: "When I have finished with them, I have finished with all people, and no one will remain."
