Translation

✧ The Day of al-Zuwayrayn Abū ʿUbaydah said: Bakr b. Wāʾil's lands had become barren, so they sought pasture in the lands of Tamīm between al-Yamāmah and Hajar. When they drew near, no Bakrī met a Tamīmī without killing him, and no Tamīmī met a Bakrī without killing him; if either of them got hold of the other's property, he took it. Thus the evil grew and became grave. Al-Ḥawfazān b. Sharīk and al-Wādik b. al-Ḥārith al-Shaybānī went out to raid Banū Dārim. It happened that Tamīm at that time had gathered in a large host from ʿAmr b. Ḥanẓalah, al-Ribāb, Saʿd, and others, and marched against Bakr b. Wāʾil, with Abū al-Raʾīs al-Ḥanẓalī in command of Tamīm. Their news reached Bakr b. Wāʾil, and they advanced under al-Aṣamm ʿAmr b. Qays b. Masʿūd Abū Mafrūq, Ḥanẓalah b. Sayyār al-ʿIjlī, and Ḥumrān b. ʿAmr al-ʿAbsī. When they met, Tamīm and al-Ribāb brought two camels and covered them with cloths, placed guards with them, and left them hobbled between the two lines, calling them Zuwayrayn, meaning two gods, and said: "We will not flee until these two camels flee." When Abū Mafrūq saw the two camels, he asked about them and was told their situation. He said: "I am your Zuwayr," and knelt between the two lines, saying: "Fight on my behalf and do not flee until I flee." The people fought a fierce battle. Shaybān reached the two camels, seized them, and slaughtered them. The fighting intensified over them, and Tamīm was routed. Their commander Abū al-Raʾīs was killed, and with him many people. Bakr swept away their wealth and women and took many captives. Al-Ḥawfazān reached the women and wealth and returned to his companions safely. Al-Aʿshā said concerning that day: O Salmā, do not ask about us, for no band was exposed at the encounter, nor any black, ignoble ones. We are those who routed on the morning when we attacked on the Day of al-Zuwayrayn in the assembly of the confederates. They remained, while the horses wheeled among them, with our grey-haired elders and the noble beardless youths. The highest eminence felt at ease with their eyes glancing like falcons perched above the hoofprints. It slipped away from them with a summer torrent, and they became stripped, under the saddle-felts, backs like smooth stones. The poets composed much about this day, especially al-Aghlab al-ʿIjlī. Among that is his rajaz poem, whose opening is: If honor pleases you, then strive mightily with Jusham. In it he says: They brought their Zuwayr, and we brought al-Aṣamm, an elder of ours like a lion from the remnant of Iram, an elder of ours, accustomed to striking the brave, striking with the sword when the spear is broken. Is there any but a raider who struck a raider and fled? The two raiders are Bakr and Tamīm. He also has the rajaz poem whose opening is: O many a war with abundant milk, in which he mentions this day.
