Translation

✧ The Day of Naʿf Qushāwah It was a day [won by] Shaybān over Tamīm. Abū ʿUbaydah said: Bisṭām b. Qays raided the Banū Yarbūʿ of Tamīm while he was at Naʿf Qushāwah. He came upon them at forenoon, on a day of wind and rain, and coincided with the camels when they had been let out to pasture. He took them all, then wheeled around and returned. The Banū Yarbūʿ called to one another against him and caught up with him. Among them was ʿUmārah b. ʿUtaybah b. al-Ḥārith b. Shihāb. Bisṭām wheeled around upon him and killed him. Mālik b. Ḥiṭṭān al-Yarbūʿī caught up with them, and he killed him. He also came upon them with Jubayr b. Abī Mulayl, and Bisṭām killed him. They killed a group of Yarbūʿ and took others captive, among them Mulayl b. Abī Mulayl. They were safe and returned victorious with booty. One of the captives said to Bisṭām: “Would it please you if Abū Mulayl were in my place?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “If I guide you to him, will you release me now?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “His son Bujayr was the most beloved of God’s creation to him. You will find him now bent over him, kissing him. Take him captive.” Bisṭām went back and saw him as he had said. He took him captive and released the Yarbūʿī. Abū Mulayl said to him: “You killed Bujayr and took me and my son Mulayl captive! By God, I will never taste food as long as I am bound.” Bisṭām feared that he would die, so he released him without ransom on condition that he would ransom Mulayl, and that he would not pursue him for the blood of his son Bujayr, nor seek any treachery against him, nor point out any weak spot for him, nor ever raid him or his people. He made a pact with him on that. Then he released him and cut off his forelock. He returned to his people and intended treachery against Bisṭām and to break his pact. But some of the Banū Yarbūʿ sent word to Bisṭām with news of him and warned him. Mutammim b. Nuwayrah said: Convey to Shihāb of Banū Bakr and its chief from me this, Abū al-Ṣahbāʾ Bisṭāmā I water the spearheads from my people and give them to drink, so they became in the open ground sleepers They do not close [their eyes] when the sleepers stir, nor in a resting place do they dream forever dreams I grieve Tamīm b. Murr, not by stratagem, until they sought back for him captives and camels Would that a captive, may my soul ransom you, you might feed from what he wished; for long you were a feeder These are several verses.
