Translation
✧ The Day of Dhū Najab Part of the account of the Day of Dhū Najab is that when the Banū ʿĀmir had inflicted upon Tamīm what they inflicted on the Day of Jabalah, they hoped to annihilate them. So they wrote to Ḥassān b. Kabshah al-Kindī, who was one of the kings of Kindah—and he is Ḥassān b. Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥujr—inviting him to raid with them against the Banū Ḥanẓalah of Tamīm. They informed him that they had killed their horsemen and their chiefs, so he came with them with his retainers and those who were with him. When word of their march reached the Banū Ḥanẓalah, ʿAmr b. ʿAmr said to them, “O Banū Mālik, you have no strength against this king and the numbers with him, so move from your place.” They had been in the upper part of the valley on the side from which the people would come, and the Banū Yarbūʿ were in the lower part of it. So the Banū Mālik shifted until they encamped behind the Banū Yarbūʿ, and the Banū Yarbūʿ came to face the king. When they saw what the Banū Mālik had done, they prepared and advanced toward the king’s route. At dawn, Ibn Kabshah arrived with those with him, and the people had already prepared, so they fought. When the Banū Mālik saw them and their steadfastness in fighting, they went to them and joined them in the battle. They fought for a long while, then Ḥushaysh b. Nimrān al-Riyāḥī struck Ibn Kabshah the king on his head and felled him, and he died. ʿUbaydah b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar was killed, and Ṭufayl b. Mālik fled on his horse Qurzul. ʿAmr b. al-Aḥwaṣ b. Jaʿfar, who was the chief of ʿĀmir, was killed, and the Banū ʿĀmir and the retainers of Ibn Kabshah were put to flight. Jarīr said in Islam, mentioning the Day of Dhū Najab: At Dhū Najab we drove them back, and Mālik stood by a brother who was not one to stand aside at the thrusting of spears. The Day of Dhū Najab was a year after the Day of Dhū Jabalah. Al-Aḥwaṣ survived his son ʿAmr for only a short while and died of grief over him.
