✧ The Second Day of Uwārah ʿAmr b. al-Mundhir al-Lakhmī had left a son of his named Asʿad with Zurārah b. ʿUdas al-Tamīmī. When the boy grew up, a fat she-camel passed by him, and he toyed with it and threw at its udder. Its owner, Suwayd, one of the Banū ʿAbd Allāh b. Dārim of Tamīm, fell upon him and killed him. Suwayd fled and reached Makkah, where he entered into an alliance with Quraysh. ʿAmr b. al-Mundhir had previously raided, with Zurārah accompanying him, but had failed. When he was opposite the two mountains of Ṭayyiʾ, Zurārah said to him: "What kind of king is it who raids and neither returns nor is struck? Turn aside upon Ṭayyiʾ, for you are opposite them." So he turned toward them, took captives, killed, and gained booty. Thus there was resentment in the hearts of Ṭayyiʾ against Zurārah. When Suwayd killed Asʿad, and Zurārah was at that time with ʿAmr, ʿAmr b. Milqaṭ al-Ṭāʾī said to ʿAmr, inciting him against Zurārah: Who will convey to ʿAmr that man was not created a sabārah Here is the helpless one of his mother At the foot of the mountain, below Uwārah So kill Zurārah; I see none Among the people more faithful than Zurārah ʿAmr said: "O Zurārah, what do you say?" He said: "You have been lied to. You know their enmity toward you." He said: "You have spoken truly." When night fell, Zurārah traveled swiftly to his people, and it was not long before he fell ill. When death came to him, he said to his son: "O Ḥājib, gather to yourself my young men among the Banū Nahshal." And he said to his nephew ʿAmr b. ʿAmr: "You must deal with ʿAmr b. Milqaṭ, for he incited the king against me." He said to him: "O uncle, you have assigned me the farther of the two in distance and the harsher of the two in might." When Zurārah died, ʿAmr b. ʿAmr prepared with a band and raided Ṭayyiʾ. He captured the two Ṭarīfs: Ṭarīf b. Mālik and Ṭarīf b. ʿAmr, and killed the Milqaṭs. ʿAlqamah b. ʿAbadah said of that: We brought our horses from Ḍariyyah We drove them at the edge of the hills in rows We captured al-Ṭarīf and al-Ṭarīf b. Mālik And the healing of the ailing was the Milqaṭs When the death of Zurārah reached ʿAmr b. al-Mundhir, he raided the Banū Dārim. He had sworn to kill a hundred of them, so he set out seeking them until he reached Uwārah. They had been warned of him and scattered. He stayed in his place and sent out his raiding parties among them. They brought him ninety-nine men, apart from those they had killed in their raids, and he killed them. Then a poet from the Barājim came to praise him, and he seized him to kill him and complete the hundred. Then he said: "The wretched one is the envoy of the Barājim!" So it became a proverb. It is said that he vowed to burn them, and for that reason he was called Muḥriq. He burned ninety-nine men of them. A man of the Barājim passed by and smelled the odor of roasting meat. He thought the king was preparing food, so he headed toward him. The king said: "Who are you?" He said: "May you avoid disgrace, I am the envoy of the Barājim." He said: "The wretched one is the envoy of the Barājim." Then he ordered that he be thrown into the fire. Jarīr said to al-Farazdaq: Where are those who were burned by the fire of ʿAmr Or where is Asʿad, the fosterling among you? After that, Tamīm came to be taunted with love of eating because of the greed of the Barājimī for food. One of them said: When a man of Tamīm dies And it pleases you that he live, bring provisions With bread, or meat, or dates Or the thing wrapped up in the bi-jād You see him burrowing in the pebbles for a year To eat the head of Luqmān b. ʿĀd It is said: Al-Aḥnaf b. Qays entered upon Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, and Muʿāwiyah said to him: "What is the thing wrapped up in the bi-jād, O Abū Baḥr?" He said: "Al-sakhīnah, O Commander of the Faithful." Al-sakhīnah is a food with which Quraysh are taunted, just as Tamīm were taunted with what is wrapped up in the bi-jād. He said: No two jesters were seen more dignified than those two.
