Translation

✧ The First Day of Uwāra It was a day between al-Mundhir b. Imriʾ al-Qays and Bakr b. Wāʾil. Its cause was that when Taghlib expelled Salama b. al-Ḥārith from among them, he took refuge with Bakr b. Wāʾil, as we have just mentioned. When he came to Bakr, they submitted to him and gathered around him, saying: "No one shall rule us but you." Then al-Mundhir sent to them summoning them to obedience to him, but they refused. So al-Mundhir swore that he would march against them, and if he overcame them, he would slaughter them on the summit of Mount Uwāra until the blood reached the foot of the mountain. He marched against them with his gathered forces, and they met at Uwāra and fought a fierce battle. The encounter resulted in the defeat of Bakr and the capture of Yazīd b. Shuraḥbīl al-Kindī. Al-Mundhir ordered his execution, and he was killed. Many people were killed in the battle, and al-Mundhir took many captives from Bakr and ordered them to be slaughtered on Mount Uwāra. The blood began to congeal. It was said to him: "May you not be cursed! If you slaughtered every Bakrī on the face of the earth, their blood would not reach the foot of the mountain. But if you poured water over it!" So he did so, and the blood flowed to the foot of the mountain, and he ordered the women to be burned with fire. A man from Qays b. Thaʿlaba was attached to al-Mundhir, and he spoke to him concerning the captives of Bakr b. Wāʾil, and al-Mundhir released them. Al-Aʿshā said, boasting of the intercession of the Qaysī with al-Mundhir on behalf of Bakr: Among us is he whose Lord granted him, at the gathering, despite poverty, while kings have their gifts— the captives of Banū Shaybān on the day of Uwāra, over the fire, when their maidens are displayed to him.
