Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

✧ Account of the killing of Zuhayr b. Jadhīmah, Khālid b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb, and al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim al-Murrī, and the account of the Day of al-Raḥraḥān Zuhayr b. Jadhīmah b. Rawāḥah b. Rabīʿah b. Māzin b. al-Ḥārith b. Qaṭīʿah b. ʿAbs al-ʿAbsī was the father of Qays b. Zuhayr, the protagonist of the war of Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ, and the chief of Qays ʿAylān. The king of al-Ḥīrah, al-Nuʿmān b. Imriʾ al-Qays, the grandfather of al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir, married into his family on account of his nobility and lordship. Al-Nuʿmān sent to Zuhayr asking him to send one of his sons to visit him, so he sent his son Shaʾs, who was the youngest of his children. He honored him and gave him gifts. When he departed to his father, he clothed him in fine robes and gave him abundant wealth. Shaʾs set out intending to reach his people, and he came to a watering place belonging to Ghanī b. Aʿṣar. There Rabāḥ b. al-Ashall al-Ghanawī killed him and took what was with him, while recognizing him. It was said to Zuhayr: "Shaʾs came from the king, and the last place he was known to be was at a watering place belonging to Ghanī." So Zuhayr traveled to the lands of Ghanī, who were allies among Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah. They gathered before him, and he asked them about his son. They swore that they knew nothing of his fate. He said: "But I know it." Abū ʿĀmir said to him: "What would satisfy you from us?" He said: "One of three things: either you bring my son back to life, or you hand over Ghanī to me so that I may kill them in retaliation for my son, or there will be war between us and you as long as we and you remain." They said: "You have left us no way out in this. As for bringing your son back to life, only God can do that. As for handing over Ghanī to you, they will refuse as free men refuse. As for war between us, by God, we love your satisfaction and hate your anger. But if you wish, accept blood-money; or if you wish, seek the killer of your son and we will hand him over to you; or forgive his blood, for it will not be lost in kinship and protection." He said: "I will do nothing but what I have mentioned." When Khālid b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb saw Zuhayr's aggression against his maternal uncles from Ghanī, he said: "By God, we have never seen a man's aggression against his own people like this day." Zuhayr said to him: "Will you take up my claim and I will leave Ghanī alone?" He said: "Yes." So Zuhayr departed, saying: Were it not for Kilāb, I would have taken my vengeance by returning Ghanī as slaves and clients. But a band of ʿĀmirīs protected them, Brandishing short spears in the land. Blazing in battle, fierce in war, Their brother is mighty, fearing no enemies. They dwell in the abode of protection out of generosity; When people perish, it remains desolate. Then he sent a woman and ordered her to conceal her lineage. He gave her the meat of a fat slaughtered camel and sent her to Ghanī to sell the meat for perfume and to ask about the condition of his son. The woman went to Ghanī and did what he commanded. She came to the wife of Rabāḥ b. al-Ashall and said to her: "I have married off a daughter of mine and I seek perfume in exchange for this meat." She gave her perfume and told her about her husband's killing of Shaʾs. The woman returned to Zuhayr and informed him. He gathered his cavalry and began raiding Ghanī until he inflicted a great slaughter upon them. War broke out between Banū ʿAbs and Banū ʿĀmir, and evil grew grave. Then Zuhayr went out with his household in the sacred month to ʿUkāẓ. He and Khālid b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb met. Khālid said to him: "Our evil from you has lasted long, O Zuhayr!" Zuhayr said: "By God, as long as I have strength to attain vengeance, it will not cease." Hawāzin used to pay tribute to Zuhayr b. Jadhīmah every year at ʿUkāẓ, and he treated them with contempt. In their hearts was rage and rancor against him. Then Khālid and Zuhayr returned to their peoples. Khālid preceded to the lands of Hawāzin and gathered his people and urged them to fight Zuhayr. They responded to him and prepared for war. They went out seeking Zuhayr, and they were on his route. Zuhayr marched until he encamped on the outskirts of Hawāzin's lands. His son Qays said to him: "Flee with us from this land, for we are near our enemy." He said to him: "O weakling, what do you frighten me with from Hawāzin and warn me of their evil? I am the most knowledgeable of people about them." His son said: "Leave aside obstinacy and obey me. March with us, for I fear their aggression." Tumāḍir bt. al-Sharīd b. Riyāḥ b. Yaqaẓah b. ʿUṣayyah al-Sulamīyah was the mother of Zuhayr's son. One of her brothers had shed blood and joined Banū ʿĀmir, and he was among them. Khālid sent him as a spy to bring him news of Zuhayr. He went out until he came to them at their camp. Qays b. Zuhayr recognized his situation, and he and his father wanted to bind him and take him with them until they left the land of Hawāzin. But his sister prevented them. They took pledges from him that he would not inform on them, and they released him. He traveled to Khālid and stood by a tree and told it the news. Khālid and those with him rode to Zuhayr, who was not far from them. They fought a fierce battle. Khālid and Zuhayr met and fought for a long time, then they grappled and fell to the ground. Warqāʾ b. Zuhayr attacked Khālid and struck him with his sword, but it did nothing because he had doubled two coats of mail. Junduḥ b. al-Bakkāʾ, the son of Khālid's wife, attacked Zuhayr and killed him while he and Khālid were wrestling. Khālid arose from him, and Hawāzin returned to their dwellings. The sons of Zuhayr carried their father to their lands. Warqāʾ b. Zuhayr said about that: I saw Zuhayr beneath Khālid's chest, So I came hastening like a mother bereft, rushing. To two heroes wrestling, each of them Seeking the sword's feather, while the sword was falling. May my right hand be paralyzed on the day I struck Khālid, When doubled iron protected him from me. Would that before the days of Khālid And before Zuhayr, Tumāḍir had never borne me. By my life, you were given good tidings when you bore me; So what did the good tidings bring back to you? Let not my people call me the pure son of a free woman If I am slain while ʿĀmir survives. Fly, Khālid, if you can fly, And do not alight except with a wary heart. Death came to you, if you remain, by a blow By which life departs and death is present. Khālid said, boasting to Hawāzin of his killing of Zuhayr: Tell Hawāzin how they can be ungrateful after I set them free, so they begot free men. I killed their lord Zuhayr after He cut off noses and increased vengeances. I made the bride-price of their women and their blood-money Like the blood-money of kings: noble camels and young ones. Zuhayr was the chief of Ghaṭafān. Khālid knew that Ghaṭafān would seek him for their chief, so he traveled to al-Nuʿmān b. Imriʾ al-Qays at al-Ḥīrah and sought his protection. He granted him protection and pitched a tent for him. The sons of Zuhayr gathered against Hawāzin. Al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim al-Murrī said: "Spare me the war against Hawāzin, and I will spare you Khālid b. Jaʿfar." Al-Ḥārith traveled until he arrived before al-Nuʿmān. He entered upon him while Khālid was with him, and the two were eating dates. Al-Nuʿmān began to question him, and Khālid envied him. He said to al-Nuʿmān: "May you never be cursed! This is a man to whom I have done a great favor. I killed Zuhayr, the chief of Ghaṭafān, so he became their chief." Al-Ḥārith said: "I will repay you for your favor to me." Al-Ḥārith began to take dates to eat, but they fell from between his fingers out of anger. ʿUrwah said to his brother Khālid: "What did you intend by your words, when you know he is a daring assassin?" Khālid said: "What does he frighten me with? By God, if he saw me sleeping, he would not wake me." Then Khālid and his brother went out to their tent and fastened its opening. Khālid slept while ʿUrwah sat at his head guarding him. When night grew dark, al-Ḥārith went to Khālid, cut the tent's fastening, and entered. He said to ʿUrwah: "If you speak, I will kill you!" Then he woke Khālid. When he awoke, he said: "Do you know me?" He said: "You are al-Ḥārith." He said: "Take the reward of your favor to me!" And he struck him with his sword al-Maʿlūb and killed him. Then he left the tent, mounted his riding camel, and departed. ʿUrwah came out of the tent crying for help and came to al-Nuʿmān's door. He entered and told him the news. Al-Nuʿmān sent men in pursuit of al-Ḥārith. Al-Ḥārith said: "When I had gone a little way, I feared that I had not killed him, so I returned in disguise, mingled with the people, and entered upon him. I struck him with the sword until I was certain he was dead, and then I returned and caught up with my people." ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿdah al-Kilābī said: O Ḥārith, had you woken him, you would have found him Neither wavering nor trembling, nor one who shirks. The Jaʿfarī woman rent her garment In grief, and she does not weep there in error. So announce the death of Abū Baḥr with every tested warrior, A thirsty one reckoned in the spear like a crescent moon. Your nobles will surely be killed for Khālid, And an image will surely be made for the wrongdoer. Al-Ḥārith answered him: By God, I did wake him, and I found him Limp of hands, sluggish, and slothful. I struck him with the sword, hitting his head, Until his garment was soaked with his filth. Al-Nuʿmān began to seek him to kill him for his protégé, and Hawāzin sought him to kill him for their chief Khālid. He joined Tamīm and sought the protection of Ḍamrah b. Ḍamrah b. Jābir b. Qaṭan b. Nahshal b. Dārim. He granted him protection against al-Nuʿmān and Hawāzin. When al-Nuʿmān learned of that, he equipped an army against Banū Dārim under the command of Ibn al-Khims al-Taghlibī, who was seeking al-Ḥārith for the blood of his father, because he had killed him. Then al-Aḥwaṣ b. Jaʿfar, the brother of Khālid, gathered Banū ʿĀmir and marched with them. They and al-Nuʿmān's army joined together against Banū Dārim and advanced. When they reached the nearest watering places of Banū Dārim, they saw a woman gathering truffles, and she had a camel with her. A man from Ghanī seized her and kept her with him. When night came, he slept, and she rose to her camel, mounted it, and traveled until she reached Banū Dārim in the morning. She went to their chief Zurārah b. ʿUdas and told him the news. She said: "Yesterday a people seized me who wanted none but you, and I do not know them." He said: "Describe them to me." She said: "I saw a man whose eyebrows had fallen, and he raised them with a strip of cloth. He had small eyes, and they acted according to his command." He said: "That is al-Aḥwaṣ, and he is the chief of the people." She said: "And I saw a man of few words; when he spoke, the people gathered as camels gather around their stallion. He had the most beautiful face of all people, and with him were two sons who stayed close to him." He said: "That is Mālik b. Jaʿfar and his two sons ʿĀmir and Ṭufayl." She said: "And I saw a large man whose beard seemed dyed red with henna." He said: "That is ʿAwf b. al-Aḥwaṣ." She said: "And I saw a large man with a wide mouth." He said: "That is Rabīʿah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Kilāb." She said: "And I saw a black man with a flat nose and short stature." He said: "That is Rabīʿah b. Qurṭ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr." She said: "And I saw a man with joined eyebrows and much hair on his upper lip; his saliva flowed onto his beard when he spoke." He said: "That is Junduḥ b. al-Bakkāʾ." She said: "And I saw a man with small eyes and a narrow forehead, leading a horse, and with him a quiver that never left his hand." He said: "That is Rabīʿah b. ʿUqayl b. Kaʿb." She said: "And I saw a man with two sandy-haired sons; when they approached, people fixed their eyes on them, and when they turned away, it was the same." He said: "That is al-Ṣaʿq b. ʿAmr b. Khuwaylid b. Nufayl and his two sons Yazīd and Zurʿah." She said: "And I saw a man who said no word but it was sharper than a blade." He said: "That is ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿdah b. Kaʿb." Zurārah ordered her to enter her tent. He sent to the shepherds ordering them to bring the camels, and they did so. He ordered them to load the families and baggage, and they marched toward the lands of Baghīḍ. He sent messengers among Banū Mālik b. Ḥanẓalah, and they came to him. He told them the news and ordered them, and they sent their baggage toward the lands of Baghīḍ. They did so and spent the night prepared. In the morning Banū ʿĀmir learned from the Ghanawī about the woman's situation and her escape. They were dismayed and gathered to deliberate. Some of them said: "It is as if the woman has gone to her people and told them the news. They have become wary and sent their families and wealth to the lands of Baghīḍ, and they spent the night prepared for you in arms. Ride with us in pursuit of their camels and wealth, for they will not be aware until we attain our need and depart." So they rode seeking the women and families of Banū Dārim. When the people were slow in coming to Zurārah, he said to his people: "The people have turned toward your women and wealth, so march to them." They marched earnestly and caught up with them before they reached the women and camels. They fought a fierce battle. Banū Mālik b. Ḥanẓalah killed Ibn al-Khims al-Taghlibī, the commander of al-Nuʿmān's army, and Banū ʿĀmir captured Maʿbad b. Zurārah. Banū Dārim held firm until midday. Then Qays b. Zuhayr and those with him came from another direction, and Banū ʿĀmir and al-Nuʿmān's army were routed. They returned to their lands while Maʿbad remained a captive with Banū ʿĀmir until he died. In those same days Zurārah b. ʿUdas also died. Another account is given of al-Ḥārith's seeking protection with Banū Tamīm. It is said that al-Nuʿmān sought something with which to anger al-Ḥārith after he killed Khālid and fled. It was said to him: "He had intended al-Ḥīrah and stayed with ʿIyāḍ b. Dayhath al-Tamīmī, who was his friend." Al-Nuʿmān sent to him and seized some of his camels. Al-Ḥārith rode and came to al-Ḥīrah in disguise, recovered his property from the shepherds, and returned it to him. He sought something to anger al-Nuʿmān, so he saw his son Ghaḍbān and struck his head with the sword and killed him. The news reached al-Nuʿmān, and he sent in pursuit of him but he was not overtaken. Al-Ḥārith said about that: The testicles of a donkey that spent the night gnawing at a star— Are my neighbor women to be eaten while your neighbor is safe? If you seized some herds and women, Then this is the son of Salmā, his head is swollen. I struck the crown of his head with the one of serpents, And none but the noble ride into abhorrence. I slew him as I slew Khālid, And my weapon was what the skulls contained. I began with that one and returned with this one, And a third will whiten the foreheads. You thought, Abū Qābūs, that you would be my protector, But you have not yet tasted bereavement while your nose is rubbed in dust. Thus said some. It is also said that the slain one was Shuraḥbīl b. al-Aswad b. al-Mundhir. Al-Aswad had left his son Shuraḥbīl with Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī, whose wife was nursing him. From that came Sinān's great wealth. His son Harim used to be given from it. Al-Ḥārith came in disguise and borrowed Sinān's saddle without Sinān's knowledge. Then he came to Sinān's wife and said: "Your husband says: Send Shuraḥbīl, the king's son, with al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim so that he may seek safety through him and be protected by him. This is his saddle as a sign." She adorned him and handed him over to him. He took him, killed him, and fled. Al-Aswad raided Banū Dhubyān and Banū Asad at Shaṭṭ Arbak, and he inflicted upon them a swift slaughter, took captives, and utterly seized the wealth. He swore that he would surely kill al-Ḥārith, so al-Ḥārith traveled in disguise to al-Ḥīrah in order to assassinate al-Aswad. While he was in his dwelling, he heard a woman crying out: 'I am under the protection of al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim,' and he recognized her situation. Al-Aswad had taken from her a small herd of camels, so he said to her: 'Go tomorrow to such-and-such a place,' and al-Ḥārith came to him. When the camels of al-Nuʿmān came to water, he took her property and handed it over to her. Among them was a she-camel called al-Laqqāʿ, and al-Ḥārith said concerning that: 'When you hear the yearning of al-Laqqāʿ, call upon Abū Laylā, for excellent is the caller. He walks with a sharp, cutting sword, with which he severs the joints of the skull-splitters.' Then he went seeking a protector, but none of the people would grant him protection, and they said: 'He would grant you protection against Hawāzin and al-Nuʿmān when you have killed his son?' So he came to Zurārah b. ʿUdas and Ḍamrah b. Ḍamrah, and they granted him protection against all the people. Then when the news of the killing of Khālid b. Jaʿfar reached ʿAmr b. al-Iṭnābah al-Khazrajī, and he was a friend of his, he said: 'By Allah, had he found him awake he would not have dared to attack him, and I wish that I had met him.' His words reached al-Ḥārith, and he said: 'By Allah, I will come to him in his camp, and I will not meet him except with his weapon.' That reached Ibn al-Iṭnābah, and he recited some verses, among them: 'Convey to al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim the threat and to the one who made vows against me: You kill only the sleeping, and you do not kill the awake, armed, mail-clad warrior.' His poetry reached al-Ḥārith, so he traveled to al-Madīnah and asked about the dwelling of Ibn al-Iṭnābah. When he drew near him, he called out: 'O Ibn al-Iṭnābah, help me!' So ʿAmr came to him and said: 'Who are you?' He said: 'A man from Banū so-and-so; I set out seeking Banū so-and-so, and a people close to you confronted me and took what was with me. Ride with me so that we may recover it.' He rode with him, donned his weapon, and went with him. When he had gone far from his dwelling, he turned upon him and said: 'Are you sleeping or awake?' He said: 'Awake.' He said: 'I am Abū Laylā, and my sword is al-Maʿlūb.' Ibn al-Iṭnābah threw down his sword—and it was said: his spear—and said: 'You have hastened me, so give me respite until I take my sword.' He said: 'Take it.' He said: 'I fear that you will hasten me from taking it.' He said: 'You have the protection of Ẓālim; I will not hasten you from taking it.' He said: 'Then by the protection of al-Iṭnābah, I will not take it!' So al-Ḥārith turned away, reciting some verses, among them: 'The words of the man ʿAmr reached us, so we met, and that was a beginning. We resolved to kill him when we came forth, but we found him armed, a mail-clad warrior. Not like a sleeping man startled by the raider, but girded with a Mashrafī sword. So we showed him favor after gaining the upper hand, through faithfulness, and I have ever been faithful.' Then when al-Ḥārith knew that al-Nuʿmān had become earnest in seeking him, and Hawāzin would not desist from seeking revenge for Khālid, he went out in disguise to Syria and sought the protection of Yazīd b. ʿAmr, who honored him and granted him protection. Yazīd had a protected she-camel, on whose neck were a knife, fire-sticks, and salt, by which he tested his subjects. Al-Ḥārith's wife had a pregnancy craving and desired fat and meat, so al-Ḥārith took the she-camel, brought it into a mountain pass, slaughtered it, and carried to his wife some of its fat and meat, and he stored some of it. The she-camel was missed and searched for, and it was found slaughtered in the valley. The king sent to a soothsayer and asked him about it, and he told him that al-Ḥārith had slaughtered it. So he sent a woman with perfume to buy some of its meat from al-Ḥārith's wife. Al-Ḥārith caught up with her after she had bought the meat, killed her, and buried her in the tent. The king asked the soothsayer about the woman, and he said: 'The one who slaughtered the she-camel killed her. If you dislike searching his tent, then order the man to depart, and when he departs, I will search his tent.' He did that, and when al-Ḥārith departed, the soothsayer searched his tent and found the woman. Al-Ḥārith sensed the evil, so he returned to the soothsayer and killed him. Al-Ḥārith was seized and brought before the king, who ordered his execution. He said: 'You granted me protection, so do not act treacherously with me.' He said: 'If I have acted treacherously with you once, you have acted treacherously with me many times.' So he killed him.
