✧ [The history of the postponement (nasīʾ) among the Arabs ] Ibn Isḥāq said: The first to postpone the months for the Arabs, thereby making lawful from them what was made lawful and making sacred from them what was made sacred, was al-Qalammas, who was Ḥudhayfah b. ʿAbd b. Fuqaym b. ʿAdī b. ʿĀmir b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Ḥārith b. Mālik b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah. Then after him his son ʿAbbād b. Ḥudhayfah took charge of that; then after ʿAbbād, Qalaʿ b. ʿAbbād; then after Qalaʿ, Umayyah b. Qalaʿ; then after Umayyah, ʿAwf b. Umayyah; then after ʿAwf, Abū Thumāmah Junādah b. ʿAwf, and he was the last of them, and upon his time Islam arose. When the Arabs had finished their pilgrimage they would gather to him, and he would proclaim the four sacred months: Rajab, Dhū al-Qaʿdah, Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and al-Muḥarram. If he wished to make something lawful from them, he would make al-Muḥarram lawful, so they would consider it lawful, and he would declare Ṣafar sacred in its place, so they would consider it sacred, in order to conform to the number of the four sacred months. When they wished to depart, he would stand among them and say: “O Allah, I have made lawful for You one of the two Ṣafars, the first Ṣafar, and I have postponed the other for the coming year.” Concerning that, ʿUmayr b. Qays, known as Jidhl al-Ṭaʿʿān, one of the Banū Firās b. Ghanm b. Thaʿlabah b. Mālik b. Kinānah, said, boasting of the postponers against the Arabs: : Maʿadd has indeed known that my people are the noblest of people, that they have noble ones; So which people could confront us with vengeance, And which people have we not bridled with a bit? Are we not the postponers for Maʿadd, Making the months of the lawful sacred? Ibn Hishām said: The first of the sacred months is al-Muḥarram.
