Translation
✧ The Affair of the Elephant and the Story of the Nasāʾah [The Building of al-Qullays] Then Abrahah built al-Qullays in Ṣanʿāʾ. He built a church the like of which had never been seen in its time in any part of the earth. Then he wrote to the Negus: "O king, I have built for you a church the like of which has not been built for any king before you, and I will not cease until I divert the pilgrimage of the Arabs to it." When the Arabs spoke of that letter of Abrahah to the Negus, a man from the Nasāʾah became angry—one of the Banū Fuqaym b. ʿAdī b. ʿĀmir b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Ḥārith b. Mālik b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah b. Ilyās of Muḍar. [The Meaning of al-Nasāʾah] The Nasāʾah were those who used to intercalate the months for the Arabs in the pre-Islamic era, making lawful a month of the sacred months and making unlawful in its place a month of the lawful months, and delaying that month. Concerning this, Allah—blessed and exalted be He—revealed: "Indeed, the postponing [of a sacred month] is an increase in disbelief, by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year, to adjust the number of months that Allah has made unlawful." [The Meaning of al-Muwāṭaʾah Linguistically] Ibn Hishām said: "li-yuwāṭiʿū" means "li-yuwāfiqū" (to correspond); al-muwāṭaʾah is al-muwāfaqah (correspondence). The Arabs say: "wāṭaʾtuka ʿalā hādhā al-amr," meaning "wāfaqtuka ʿalayhi" (I have agreed with you on this matter). Al-īṭāʾ in poetry is agreement—the correspondence of the two rhyming words from one expression and one type, such as the saying of al-ʿAjjāj—and al-ʿAjjāj's name is ʿAbd Allāh b. Ruʾbah, one of the Banū Saʿd b. Zayd b. Manāh b. Tamīm b. Murr b. Udd b. Ṭānijah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar b. Nizār. On a slippery, swift, uncoiling serpent Then he said: The surge of the channel in the loosened channel And these two verses are from a long poem of his.
