Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ إحْدَاثُ الْكِنَانِيِّ فِي الْقُلَّيْسِ، وَحَمْلَةُ أَبْرَهَةَ عَلَى الْكَعْبَةِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَخَرَجَ الْكِنَانِيُّ حَتَّى أَتَى الْقُلَّيْسَ فَقَعَدَ فِيهَا - قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ يَعْنِي أَحْدَثَ فِيهَا - قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَلَحِقَ بِأَرْضِهِ، فَأُخْبِرَ بِذَلِكَ أَبْرَهَةُ فَقَالَ: مَنْ صَنَعَ هَذَا ؟ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: صَنَعَ هَذَا رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْعَرَبِ مِنْ أَهْلِ هَذَا الْبَيْتِ الَّذِي تَحُجُّ الْعَرَبُ إلَيْهِ بِمَكَّةَ لَمَّا سَمِعَ قَوْلَكَ: أَصْرِفُ إلَيْهَا حَجَّ الْعَرَبِ غَضِبَ فَجَاءَ فَقَعَدَ فِيهَا، أَيْ أَنَّهَا لَيْسَتْ لِذَلِكَ بِأَهْلِ. فَغَضِبَ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ أَبْرَهَةُ وَحَلَفَ لَيَسِيرَنَّ إلَى الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى يَهْدِمَهُ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ الْحَبَشَةَ فَتَهَيَّأَتْ وَتَجَهَّزَتْ، ثُمَّ سَارَ وَخَرَجَ مَعَهُ بِالْفِيلِ، وَسَمِعَتْ بِذَلِكَ الْعَرَبُ، فَأَعْظَمُوهُ وَفَظِعُوا بِهِ، وَرَأَوْا جِهَادَهُ حَقًّا عَلَيْهِمْ، حِينَ سَمِعُوا بِأَنَّهُ يُرِيدُ هَدْمَ الْكَعْبَةِ، بَيْتِ اللَّهِ الْحَرَامِ.
Translation
✧ [The Kinānī’s act in al-Qullays and Abraha’s expedition against the Kaʿbah] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Kinānī went out until he came to al-Qullays and sat in it — Ibn Hishām said: that is, he defecated in it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he left and caught up with his land. Abraha was informed of that and said, “Who did this?” It was said to him, “A man from the Arabs, one of the people of this House to which the Arabs make pilgrimage in Makkah, did this when he heard your saying, ‘I shall divert the pilgrimage of the Arabs to it.’ He became angry, came, and sat in it, meaning that it was not worthy of that.” At that Abraha became angry and swore that he would march to the House until he demolished it. Then he commanded the Abyssinians, and they prepared and equipped themselves. Then he marched and went out with the elephant. The Arabs heard of that and deemed it grave and were terrified by it, and they considered fighting him a duty upon them when they heard that he intended to demolish the Kaʿbah, the Sacred House of Allah.
