Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ The First Worship of Stones Among the Descendants of Ishmael Ibn Isḥāq said: They claim that the first instance of stone worship among the descendants of Ishmael was that no one of them would depart from Makkah—when it became too confined for them and they sought open space in the lands—without carrying with him a stone from the stones of the Sanctuary, out of veneration for the Sanctuary. Wherever they camped, they would set it down and circumambulate it as they circumambulated the Kaʿbah, until this led them on until they came to worship whichever stones they deemed good and admired, until the later generations succeeded and forgot what they had been upon, and replaced the religion of Abraham and Ishmael with something else, and worshipped idols, and fell into the errors that the nations before them had been upon. Yet among them, despite that, there remained remnants of the covenant of Abraham to which they clung: veneration of the House, circumambulation of it, the ḥajj and the ʿumrah, the standing at ʿArafah and Muzdalifah, the offering of sacrificial camels, and the raising of the voice with the talbiyah for ḥajj and ʿumrah, while introducing into it what did not belong to it. Thus Kinānah and Quraysh, when they raised the talbiyah, would say: "Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka illā sharīkun huwa laka, tamlikuhu wa mā malak." So they would declare His oneness in the talbiyah, then admit their idols alongside Him, and place the dominion of those idols in His hand. God, Blessed and Exalted, says to Muḥammad ﷺ: "And most of them do not believe in God except while they are associators"—that is, they do not declare My oneness out of recognition of My due except that they set up with Me a partner from My creation.
