Translation

✧ [The Idols in the Time of Noah’s People] The people of Noah had idols upon which they devotedly lingered. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, related their story to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: “And they said: Do not abandon your gods; and do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr. And indeed they have led many astray.” [The Tribes and Their Idols, and Something About Them] Those who took these idols from the descendants of Ishmael and others, and named them after the names of those idols when they departed from the religion of Ishmael, were: Hudhayl b. Mudrikah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar; they took Suwāʿ, and it belonged to them at Burhāṭ. And Kalb b. Wabrah of Quḍāʿah; they took Wadd at Dūmat al-Jandal. Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Mālik al-Anṣārī said: : We forget al-Lāt, al-ʿUzzā, and Wadd, and we strip from them the necklaces and earrings. Ibn Hishām said: This line is in a poem of his which I shall mention in its proper place, if Allah wills. [Ibn Hishām’s Opinion on the Lineage of Kalb b. Wabrah] Ibn Hishām said: Kalb b. Wabrah b. Taghlib b. Ḥulwān b. ʿImrān b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah. [Yaghūth and Its Worshipers] Ibn Isḥāq said: Anʿum of Ṭayyiʾ, and the people of Jurash of Madhḥij, took Yaghūth at Jurash. [Ibn Hishām’s Opinion on Anʿum, and on the Lineage of Ṭayyiʾ] Ibn Hishām said: It is said: Anʿum. And Ṭayyiʾ b. Udad b. Mālik, and Mālik is Madhḥij b. Udad. And it is said: Ṭayyiʾ b. Udad b. Zayd b. Kahlān b. Sabaʾ. [Yaʿūq and Its Worshipers] Ibn Isḥāq said: Khaywān, a branch of Hamdān, took Yaʿūq in the land of Hamdān in the land of Yemen. Ibn Hishām said: Mālik b. Namaṭ al-Hamdānī said: : Allah gives feathers in this world and clips, but Yaʿūq neither clips nor gives feathers. This line is in some verses of his. [Hamdān and Its Lineage] Ibn Hishām said: The name of Hamdān is Awsalah b. Mālik b. Zayd b. Rabīʿah b. Awsalah b. al-Khiyār b. Mālik b. Zayd b. Kahlān b. Sabaʾ. And it is said: Awsalah b. Zayd b. Awsalah b. al-Khiyār. And it is said: Hamdān b. Awsalah b. Rabīʿah b. Mālik b. al-Khiyār b. Mālik b. Zayd b. Kahlān b. Sabaʾ. [Nasr and Its Worshipers] Ibn Isḥāq said: Dhū al-Kalāʿ of Ḥimyar; they took Nasr in the land of Ḥimyar. [ʿUmyānis and Its Worshipers] Khawlān had an idol called ʿUmyānis in the land of Khawlān. They would apportion to it a share of their cattle and their crops, a share between it and Allah, as they claimed. Whatever entered into the right of ʿUmyānis from the right of Allah, the Exalted, which they had assigned to Him, they would leave for it; and whatever entered into the right of Allah, the Exalted, from the right of ʿUmyānis, they would return to it. They are a branch of Khawlān, called al-Adīm. Concerning them, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, revealed, as they mention: “And they assign to Allah from what He created of crops and cattle a share, and they say: This is for Allah, according to their claim, and this is for our partners. But what is for their partners does not reach Allah, and what is for Allah reaches their partners. Evil is what they judge.” [Lineage of Khawlān] Ibn Hishām said: Khawlān b. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥāf b. Quḍāʿah; and it is said: Khawlān b. ʿAmr b. Murrah b. Udad b. Zayd b. Mihsaʿ b. ʿAmr b. ʿArīb b. Zayd b. Kahlān b. Sabaʾ; and it is said: Khawlān b. ʿAmr b. Saʿd al-ʿAshīrah b. Madhḥij. [Saʿd and Its Worshipers] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Banū Milkān b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar had an idol called Saʿd, a tall rock in a desert tract of their land. A man from Banū Milkān came with his camels, which were made to be dedicated to it, seeking its blessing, as he claimed. When the camels saw it, being pastured and not ridden, and upon which blood used to be poured, they shied away from it and scattered in every direction. Their owner, the Milkānī, became angry, took a stone, and threw it at the idol, then said: “May Allah not bless you. You have startled my camels away from me.” Then he went out in search of them until he gathered them. When they were gathered to him, he said: : We came to Saʿd so that he might unite our affairs, but Saʿd scattered us; so we are not of Saʿd. And is Saʿd anything but a rock in a desolate tract of land, which calls neither to error nor to right guidance? [The Idol of Daws] Among Daws there was an idol belonging to ʿAmr b. Ḥumamah al-Dawsī. Ibn Hishām said: I shall mention his account in its proper place, if Allah wills. [Lineage of Daws] Daws b. ʿUdthān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Zahrān b. Kaʿb b. al-Ḥārith b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik b. Naṣr b. al-Asad b. al-Ghawth. And it is said: Daws b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Zahrān b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth. [Hubal] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh had taken an idol over a well inside the Kaʿbah, called Hubal. Ibn Hishām said: I shall mention its account, if Allah wills, in its proper place. [Isāf and Nāʾilah, and ʿĀʾishah’s Account of Them] Ibn Isḥāq said: They took Isāf and Nāʾilah at the site of Zamzam, where they would slaughter animals by them. Isāf and Nāʾilah were a man and a woman of Jurhum—he was Isāf b. Baghy, and Nāʾilah bt. Dīk—and Isāf had intercourse with Nāʾilah in the Kaʿbah, so Allah transformed them into two stones. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm narrated to me, from ʿAmrah bt. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿd b. Zurārah, that she said: I heard ʿĀʾishah ؓ say: We continued to hear that Isāf and Nāʾilah were a man and a woman of Jurhum who committed a sin in the Kaʿbah, so Allah, the Exalted, transformed them into two stones. And Allah knows best. Ibn Isḥāq said: Abū Ṭālib said: : And where the Ashʿarūn make their camels kneel, at the outflow of the torrents from Isāf and Nāʾil. Ibn Hishām said: This line is in a poem of his which I shall mention in its proper place, if Allah, the Exalted, wills.
