Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ نَسَبُ بَارِقٍ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: بَارِقٌ: بَنُو عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ بْنِ امْرِئِ الْقَيْسِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَازِنِ بْنِ الْأَسْدِ بْنِ الْغَوْثِ، وَهُمْ فِي شَنُوءَةَ. قَالَ الْكُمَيْتُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ: : وَأَزْدُ شَنُوءَةَ انْدَرَءُوا عَلَيْنَا بِجُمٍّ يَحْسِبُونَ لَهَا قُرُونَا فَمَا قُلْنَا لِبَارِقَ قَدْ أَسَأْتُمْ وَمَا قُلْنَا لِبَارِقَ أَعْتِبُونَا قَالَ: وَهَذَانِ الْبَيْتَانِ فِي قَصِيدَةٍ لَهُ. وَإِنَّمَا سُمُّوا بِبَارِقَ: لِأَنَّهُمْ تَبِعُوا الْبَرْقَ.
Translation
✧ [The lineage of Bāriq] Ibn Hishām said: Bāriq are the Banū ʿAdī b. Ḥāritha b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Ḥāritha b. Imriʾ al-Qays b. Thaʿlaba b. Māzin b. al-Asd b. al-Ghawth, and they are among Shanūʾa. Al-Kumayt b. Zayd said: : And the Azd of Shanūʾa rushed upon us with a multitude for which they count horns. So we did not say to Bāriq, 'You have done wrong,' and we did not say to Bāriq, 'Set us right.' He said: These two verses are in a poem of his. They were called Bāriq only because they followed the lightning.
