Translation

✧ Then the year 378 AH began Mention of the arrest of Shukr the servant In this year, Sharaf al-Dawlah arrested Shukr the servant, who had been the most particular of people to his father ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and the closest of them to him, relying on his word and depending on him. The reason for his arrest was that during the days of his father, he had sought to harm Sharaf al-Dawlah and had been the one who undertook his banishment from Baghdādh to Kirmān, and had supported the cause of Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah. Sharaf al-Dawlah bore a grudge against him for that. When Sharaf al-Dawlah took possession of Iraq, Shukr went into hiding. He sought him most intensely but he was not found. Shukr had an Abyssinian concubine whom he had married, and she was sought after by Sharaf al-Dawlah. She remained with him for a while, serving him. Her heart had become attached to someone else, so she used to take food and other things and carry them wherever she wished. Shukr became aware of her, could not tolerate her, and struck her. She went out angrily to the gate of Sharaf al-Dawlah's house and informed them of Shukr's situation. He was seized and brought before Sharaf al-Dawlah, who wanted to kill him, but Niḥrīr the servant interceded for him, so he granted him to him. He asked permission to make the pilgrimage, and he permitted him. He traveled to Makkah, then from there to Miṣr, where he attained a great position. His news will come, God Almighty willing. Mention of the dismissal of Bakjūr from Damascus In this year, Bakjūr was dismissed from Damascus. The reason for that was that he behaved badly in Damascus and committed blameworthy deeds. The vizier Yaʿqūb b. Killis was opposed to him and held a poor opinion of him. In addition to that, there was what he did to his companions in Damascus, as we have mentioned. When his action in Damascus reached him, he moved to dismiss him, and his reputation became ugly before al-ʿAzīz billāh, who agreed. Troops were equipped from Miṣr with the commander Munīr the servant, and they marched to Syria. Bakjūr gathered the Arabs and others and went out. He met the Egyptian army at Dārayyā and fought them. The fighting intensified between them, and Bakjūr and his army were defeated. He feared the arrival of Nazzāl, the governor of Tripoli, who had been written to from Miṣr to support Munīr. When Bakjūr was defeated, he feared that Nazzāl would come and he would be taken, so he sent to request safe conduct in order to hand over the city to them. They agreed to that. He gathered all his wealth and departed, concealing his tracks lest the Egyptians betray him. He headed to al-Raqqah and took possession of it. Munīr took over the city, and its people rejoiced at him and were pleased with his governorship. We shall mention in the year 381 [and three hundred] the rest of his news and his killing, God Almighty willing. Mention of al-Aṣfar's victory over the Qarāmiṭah In this year, a man known as al-Aṣfar of the Banū al-Muntafiq gathered a large force. Between him and a group of the Qarāmiṭah there was a severe battle in which the leader of the Qarāmiṭah was killed, his companions were defeated, some of them were killed, and many were taken captive. Al-Aṣfar marched to al-Aḥsāʾ, and the Qarāmiṭah fortified themselves against him. He turned aside to al-Qaṭīf and took what was in it of their slaves, their wealth, and their livestock, and went with them to al-Baṣrah. Mention of a fine anecdote In this year, al-Ṣāḥib b. ʿAbbād, on the first of al-Muḥarram, presented to Fakhr al-Dawlah a dinar weighing one thousand mithqāls. On one of its sides was written: And a red one that imitates the sun in form and image, so its attributes are derived from His attributes. If it is said a dinar, then its name is true; and if it is said a thousand, that is one of its marks. A marvel, the like of which has never been struck in all time, nor have its counterparts been minted for its nobles. A celestial dynasty has brought it forth, in which good fortune has set upright the head of his spear. And its lineage goes back to Shāhānshāh, though he deems it small for his suppliants. It tells that he will remain for years like its weight, so that the world may rejoice in the length of his life. His servant and the son of his servant took pains over it, and the planting of his favors, and the Kāfī of his kufāt. (On the other side was Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ, the title of the Caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ lillāh, the title of Fakhr al-Dawlah, and the name of Jurjān, because it was struck there. His saying: "a celestial dynasty" means that the title of Fakhr al-Dawlah was Falak al-Ummah. And his saying: "the Kāfī of his kufāt," for al-Ṣāḥib's title was Kāfī al-Kufāt.)
