Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
ابْنُ كِنَانَةَ كِنَانَةُ: بِكَسْرِ الْكَافِ وَنُونَيْنِ مَفْتُوحَتَيْنِ بَيْنَهُمَا أَلِفٌ ثُمَّ هَاءٌ مَنْقُولٌ مِنَ الْكِنَانَةِ الَّتِي هِيَ الْجَعْبَةُ بِفَتْحِ الْجِيمِ وَسُكُونِ الْعَيْنِ الْمُهْمَلَةِ، سُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ لِأَنَّهُ كَانَ سِتْرًا عَلَى قَوْمِهِ كَالْكِنَانَةِ السَّاتِرَةِ لِلسِّهَامِ. قَالَ الزَّجَّاجِيُّ مِنْ أَمْثَالِهِمْ: "قَبْلَ الرِّمَاءِ تُمْلَأُ الْكَنَائِنُ". وَيُكَنَّى أَبَا النَّضْرِ وَأُمُّهُ عَوَانَةُ بِنْتُ سَعْدِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَيْلَانَ بْنِ مُضَرَ. وَيُقَالُ هِنْدُ بِنْتُ عَمْرِو بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَيْلَانَ. وَقَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ سَلَّامُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلَّامٍ الْإِشْبِيلِيُّ. قَالَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: قَالَ عَامِرٌ الْعَدْوَانِيُّ لِابْنِهِ فِي وَصِيَّتِهِ: يَا بُنَيَّ أَدْرَكْتُ كِنَانَةَ بْنَ خُزَيْمَةَ وَكَانَ شَيْخًا مُسِنًّا عَظِيمَ الْقَدْرِ، وَكَانَتِ الْعَرَبُ تَحُجُّ إِلَيْهِ لِعِلْمِهِ وَفَضْلِهِ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهُ قَدْ آنَ خُرُوجُ نَبِيٍّ مِنْ مَكَّةَ يُدْعَى أَحْمَدَ، يَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ وَإِلَى الْبِرِّ وَالْإِحْسَانِ وَمَكَارِمِ الْأَخْلَاقِ، فَاتَّبِعُوهُ تَزْدَادُوا شَرَفًا وَعِزًّا إِلَى عِزِّكُمْ. قَالَ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: إِنَّ كِنَانَةَ رَأَى وَهُوَ نَائِمٌ فِي الْحِجْرِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ: تَخَيَّرْ يَا أَبَا النَّضْرِ بَيْنَ الصَّهِيلِ وَالْهَدْرِ وَعِمَارَةِ الْجُدْرِ وَعِزِّ الدَّهْرِ. فَقَالَ: كُلٌّ يَا رَبِّ. فَصَارَ هَذَا كُلُّهُ فِي قُرَيْشٍ.
Translation
✧ Ibn Kinānah Kinānah: with kasrah on the kāf and two nūns with fatḥah, between them an alif, then a hāʾ, transferred from al-kinānah (the quiver), which is al-jaʿbah with fatḥah on the jīm and sukūn on the unpointed ʿayn. He was named that because he was a cover for his people, like the quiver that covers arrows. Al-Zajjājī said, among their proverbs: "Before the shooting, the quivers are filled." His kunyah is Abū al-Naḍr, and his mother was ʿAwānah bt. Saʿd b. Qays b. ʿAylān b. Muḍar. It is also said: Hind bt. ʿAmr b. Qays b. ʿAylān. Abū al-Ḥasan Sallām b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sallām al-Ishbīlī said: Abū ʿAmr, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: ʿĀmir al-ʿAdwānī said to his son in his will: O my son, I met Kinānah b. Khuzaymah, and he was an aged elder, great in standing; the Arabs would make pilgrimage to him because of his knowledge and excellence. He said: The time has come for the emergence of a prophet from Makkah called Aḥmad, who calls to God, to righteousness, to benevolence, and to noble virtues, so follow him and you will increase in honor and might in addition to your might. Abū al-Rabīʿ, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: Kinānah saw while sleeping in the Ḥijr, and it was said to him: Choose, O Abū al-Naḍr, between neighing, cooing, building walls, and the might of the age. He said: All of it, O Lord. So all of this came to be in Quraysh.
