✧ Mention of the march of Ḥusām al-Dawlah and Qābūs to Jurjān When the letters came from the amīr Nūḥ to Ḥusām al-Dawlah ordering him to march with all the armies of Khurāsān together with Fakhr al-Dawlah and Qābūs, he gathered the armies and mustered them. At Naysābūr there assembled armies that filled the expanse, and they marched toward Jurjān, encamped before it, and besieged it. In it was Muʾayyid al-Dawlah, and with him from his own armies and the armies of his brother ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was a great host, yet they did not approach the armies of Khurāsān in strength. Ḥusām al-Dawlah besieged them for two months, engaging them in fighting morning and evening, and the supply of provisions became restricted for the people of Jurjān, until they were eating barley bran kneaded with clay. When the matter became severe for them, they went out from Jurjān in the month of Ramaḍān resolved upon a true fight, either for them or against them. When the people of Khurāsān saw them, they thought it would be as with the previous sallies: there would be fighting, then mutual withdrawal. They met and fought a severe battle, and they saw the matter was contrary to what they had thought. Muʾayyid al-Dawlah had corresponded with one of the commanders of Khurāsān named Fāʾiq al-Khāṣṣah, enticing him and holding out hopes to him, and he agreed to flee at the encounter. News of this Fāʾiq will come later from which his standing with the dynasty will be known. When Muʾayyid al-Dawlah went out on that day, he directed his army against Fāʾiq and his companions, and Fāʾiq and those with him fled, and the people followed him. Fakhr al-Dawlah and Ḥusām al-Dawlah stood firm in the center, and the fighting was intense until the end of the day. When they saw the successive flight of the people, they joined them. The companions of Muʾayyid al-Dawlah seized from them spoils that none knows but God Almighty, and they took a great amount of provisions. Ḥusām al-Dawlah, Fakhr al-Dawlah, and Qābūs returned to Naysābūr and wrote to Bukhārā with the news. The answer came to them encouraging them and promising to send armies and return to Jurjān and al-Rayy. The amīr Nūḥ ordered all the armies to march to Naysābūr, and they came to it from every highland, streaming down. There assembled in the outskirts of Naysābūr more armies than on the first occasion, and Ḥusām al-Dawlah was waiting for the successive arrival of reinforcements to march with them. Then the news came to them of the killing of the vizier Abū al-Ḥusayn al-ʿUtbī, and that gathering dispersed, and that plan came to nothing. The cause of his killing was that Abū al-Ḥasan b. Sīmjūr set a group of mamlūks upon him to kill him, and they fell upon him and killed him. When he was killed, al-Raḍī Nūḥ b. Manṣūr wrote to Ḥusām al-Dawlah summoning him to Bukhārā to administer his state and to gather together what had been scattered from it by the killing of Abū al-Ḥusayn. He marched from Naysābūr to it and killed those of the killers of Abū al-Ḥusayn whom he seized. His killing was in the year 372 [and 300].
