✧ Letters from al-ʿAzīz bi-Llāh, ruler of Egypt: In this year, the messenger of al-ʿAzīz bi-Llāh, ruler of Egypt, arrived to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah with letters which he delivered. The arrest of Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-ʿAlawī In it, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah arrested Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-ʿAlawī and sent him to Fārs. The reason for his arrest was what al-Muṭahhar said concerning him at the time of his death. He sent to Kūfah and seized his properties, and found for him an uncountable amount of money, weapons, and stores. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah favored his brother Abū al-Fatḥ Aḥmad and appointed him to lead the people in the pilgrimage. The marriage of al-Ṭāʾiʿ to the daughter of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah In it, a new tie was formed between al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-Llāh and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and al-Ṭāʾiʿ married his daughter. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's aim was that his daughter would bear a male child, and he would make him his heir, so that the caliphate would be in (a child of theirs with lineage). The bride-price was one hundred thousand dinars. A strife between the common Muslims of Shīrāz and the Magians In it, there was a great strife between the common Muslims of Shīrāz and the Magians, in which the houses of the Magians were looted, and they were beaten, and a group of them was killed. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah heard the news, so he sent to them someone who gathered everyone who had a part in that, and beat them, and went to great lengths in disciplining and rebuking them. Sending a military detachment to ʿAyn al-Tamr In it, he sent a military detachment to ʿAyn al-Tamr, where Ḍabbah b. Muḥammad al-Asadī was, and he followed the path of thieves and highway robbers. He did not realize until the armies were upon him, so he left his family and wealth and escaped alone with his life. His wealth and family were taken, and ʿAyn al-Tamr was taken possession of. Before that, he had plundered the shrine of al-Ḥusayn, may God's blessings be upon him, so he was punished with this. The arrest of al-Sharīf Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā al-Mūsawī In it: [Al-Sharīf Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā al-Mūsawī was arrested] Al-Sharīf Abū Aḥmad al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā al-Mūsawī was arrested in Ṣafar, and [Abū al-Ḥasan] ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq al-ʿAlawī was appointed to the office of naqīb of the Ṭālibiyyīn in Baghdād and Wāsiṭ, and Abū al-Fatḥ Aḥmad b. ʿUmar b. Yaḥyā to their office in Kūfah, and Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. al-Qāsim al-Muḥammadī to their office in Baṣrah and al-Ahwāz. Abū Aḥmad had been accused of what was not a sin. A forged handwriting imitating his own was shown to him, concerning the divulgence of secrets. It was said to him: "ʿIzz al-Dawlah gave you a contract for the ransom of his slave, and you concealed it from us!" He said: "As for the handwriting, it is not mine. As for the contract, he said: 'If he does not accept what I paid, then pay this,' and it was not permissible for me to betray him." The arrest of Abū Maʿrūf Ibn Maʿrūf, the Chief Judge On Monday, four nights remaining of Ṣafar, [ʿAḍud al-Dawlah] arrested Abū Muḥammad Ibn Maʿrūf, the Chief Judge, and sent him to the fortress in Fārs. He appointed Abū Saʿd Bishr b. al-Ḥusayn to what had been his office of Chief Judge. He charged Ibn Maʿrūf with negligence regarding the rights of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and with indulging in what judges should not do. He responded to that, but no attention was paid to him. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah asks al-Ṭāʾiʿ to add Tāj al-Millah to his title ʿAḍud al-Dawlah asked al-Ṭāʾiʿ, on his second arrival to the capital, to add Tāj al-Millah to his title, and to renew the robes of honor upon him, and to dress him with the crown and the jewelry studded with gems. He granted him that. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ sat upon the throne of the caliphate at the front of the courtyard of peace, and around him nearly one hundred of his special servants with belts, swords, and ornaments. Before him was the Muṣḥaf of ʿUthmān, upon his shoulders was the mantle, in his hand was the staff, and he was girded with the sword of the Prophet ﷺ. He raised a curtain that ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had sent, and asked that it be a screen for al-Ṭāʾiʿ so that no eye of the soldiers would fall upon him before him. The Turks and the Daylamites entered, and none of them had any iron weapon with him. The nobles and the holders of ranks stood on both sides. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah arrived, al-Ṭāʾiʿ was informed of him, so he gave him permission, and he entered. He ordered the curtain to be raised. It was said to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah: "The eye of the caliph has fallen upon you." So he kissed the ground, and no one with him kissed it, in acknowledgment of his right to kiss the ground before him. Ziyād, among the commanders, was alarmed at what he witnessed, and said in Persian: "What is this, O king? Is this God, Mighty and Majestic?" He turned to Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Yūsuf and said to him: "Make him understand, and tell him: This is the vicegerent of God on earth." Then he continued walking and kissing the ground nine times. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ turned to Khāliṣ the servant and said to him: "Bring him near." ʿAḍud al-Dawlah ascended and kissed the ground twice. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "Come closer to me, come closer to me." He came closer, bent down, and kissed his foot. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ folded his right hand over him. Before him was his couch, to the right side of the throne, and he did not sit. He said to him a second time: "Sit." He gestured, but did not sit. He said to him: "I adjure you, you shall sit." He kissed the throne and sat. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "How great was our longing for you and our desire to converse with you!" He said: "My excuse is known." He said: "Your intention is trusted, and your belief is relied upon." And he inclined his head. Then al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "I have decided to delegate to you what God, Exalted is He, has entrusted to me of the affairs of the subjects in the east and west of the earth, and their administration in all its regions, except my private matters and my means, and what is beyond my door. So take charge of that, seeking the guidance of God, Exalted is He." ʿAḍud al-Dawlah said to him: "May God, Mighty and Majestic, help me in obedience to our master and his service. I wish al-Muṭahhar, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and the prominent commanders who entered with me to hear the words of the Commander of the Faithful." They were given permission, and al-Ṭāʾiʿ said: "Bring al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā, Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Maʿrūf, Ibn Umm Shaybān, and al-Zaynabī." They were brought forward. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-Llāh repeated the words of delegation to him and reliance upon him. Then he turned to Ṭarīf the servant and said: "O Ṭarīf, let the robes of honor be bestowed upon him, and let him be crowned." ʿAḍud al-Dawlah rose to the portico, and was dressed in the robes of honor. He came out and gestured to kiss the ground, but was unable. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "[It is enough for you,] it is enough for you." And he ordered him to sit upon the throne. Then al-Ṭāʾiʿ called for his banners to be brought forward. Two banners were brought forward. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ prayed for God's guidance, Mighty and Majestic, and invoked blessings upon His Messenger ﷺ, and tied them. Then he said: "Let him read his letter." He read it. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ said to him: "May God choose what is best for us and for you and for the Muslims. I command you with what God has commanded you, and I forbid you from what God has forbidden you, and I absolve myself before God from anything else. Rise in the name of God." Al-Ṭāʾiʿ took a sword that was between the two cushions beside him, and girded him with it in addition to the sword he had already girded him with along with the robe of honor. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah wanted to depart, he said [to al-Ṭāʾiʿ]: "I take it as a bad omen to turn back on my heels, so I ask that this door be opened for me." He gave permission for that. At that moment, about three hundred craftsmen, whom ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had prepared, were seen, until a weighing scale was prepared for the horse. He mounted, and the army marched on foot until he exited from the private gate, then the commanders and the army mounted, and he proceeded through the city. Then after three days, al-Ṭāʾiʿ sent him a gift containing a garment of fine linen, a golden tray, and a crystal ewer, in which there was some drink, as if part of it had been drunk, and over the mouth of the ewer was a silk cloth tied and sealed, and a crystal cup of the same kind. Abū Naṣr [the treasurer] arrived with him, bringing with him an amount of money similar to what we mentioned on his first entry in the previous year. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah returned, he held a session for congratulations. Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣābī said extemporaneously: O ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, whose hands have grasped, through his glory, his noblest roots, you have worn for kingship the crown of his community, severing the bonds of estrangement with its east. I have attained from you the new in an age that God has prolonged, not worn out. The forehead shines from you with a fringe that our glances gaze upon in the light of its splendor. It is like the sun in its illumination, and resembles the full moon in its radiance. When I saw the men seeking it from every stalwart of poetry, its master, I turned myself to you, its sight, to seek praise for as long as it speaks. My mind said to him, with greed, that you might vie with the sea in its flowing. Be brief and concise, so I said, in summary, about his fortune and his most truthful words: the sandal boasts beneath his sole, so how much more the crown above the parting of his hair! The march to the chief of the outlaws, Ḍabbah al-Asadī In the month of Ramaḍān, an expedition was sent against Ḍabbah b. Muḥammad al-Asadī, who was one of the greatest outlaws. He had killed people and plundered wealth, and had fortified himself in ʿAyn al-Tamr for more than thirty years, and reaching it was difficult. When the army appeared before him, he fled and left his family and his close followers, and most of them were captured, and the town was taken.
