✧ Mention of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's aiming at his brother Fakhr al-Dawlah and seizing his lands In this year ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched to the lands of al-Jabal and took possession of them. The reason for that was that Bakhtiyār b. Muʿizz al-Dawlah had been corresponding with his cousin Fakhr al-Dawlah, after the death of Rukn al-Dawlah, and summoning him to agree with him against ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. He agreed to that and they made a pact. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah learned of it, but he concealed that until now. When he had finished with his enemies such as Abū Taghlib and Bakhtiyār and others, and Ḥasanūyah b. al-Ḥusayn had died, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah thought that the matter could be set right between him and his two brothers, so he corresponded with his two brothers Fakhr al-Dawlah and Muʾayyid al-Dawlah, and with Qābūs b. Washmakīr. As for his message to his brother Muʾayyid al-Dawlah, he thanked him for his obedience and agreement, for he had been obedient to him and not opposed him. As for to Fakhr al-Dawlah, he reproached him and sought to win him over, and mentioned to him what the proof obligated him to do. As for to Qābūs, he advised him to keep the covenants that were between them. Fakhr al-Dawlah answered with the answer of a disputant and an adversary, and he forgot the seniority of age, the breadth of the kingdom, and his father's covenant. As for Qābūs, he answered with the answer of one who is watchful. The messenger was Khawāshādhah, who was one of the leading men of his companions, and he won over the companions of Fakhr al-Dawlah, guaranteeing to him the land grants, and took covenants from them. When the messenger returned, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah set out from Baghdādh with the resolve to march to al-Jabal and set right those affairs. He began by sending the armies ahead of him, one after another: among them Abū al-Wafāʾ over an army, Khawāshādhah over an army, and Abū al-Fatḥ al-Muẓaffar b. Muḥammad in an army. These armies marched, and he stayed on the outskirts of Baghdādh. Then ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched, and good tidings met him that his armies had entered Hamadhān and that a great number of the commanders of Fakhr al-Dawlah and the men of Ḥasanūyah had sought safe-conduct. Abū al-Ḥasan ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ḥamdawayh, the vizier of Fakhr al-Dawlah, came to him (with the masses of his companions, and the affair of Fakhr al-Dawlah collapsed). He was in Hamadhān, and he feared his brother and remembered the killing of his cousin Bakhtiyār, so he went out fleeing and headed for the country of al-Daylam, then he went out from there to Jurjān and alighted with Shams al-Maʿālī Qābūs b. Washmakīr and sought refuge with him. He gave him safety and sheltered him, and brought to him more than he had imagined, and made him a partner in what was under his hand of kingship and other things. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah took possession of what had been in the hands of Fakhr al-Dawlah: Hamadhān, al-Rayy, and the lands between them, (and he handed them over to his brother Muʾayyid al-Dawlah b. Buwayh, and made him his deputy and lieutenant in those lands). He alighted at al-Rayy and took control of those districts. Then ʿAḍud al-Dawlah turned aside to the province of Ḥasanūyah the Kurd, and he made for Nahāwand, and also al-Dīnawar and the fortress of Sarmāj, and he took what was in them of the treasures of Ḥasanūyah, which were of great value, and he took possession along with them of several of the fortresses of Ḥasanūyah. On this journey he was seized by epilepsy, which had taken him at al-Mawṣil and had occurred there, but he had concealed it. He became forgetful, not remembering a thing except after great effort, and he concealed that too. This is the way of the world: it is not pure for anyone. The sons of Ḥasanūyah came to him, and he seized ʿAbd al-Razzāq, Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, and Abū ʿAdnān, and he treated well Badr b. Ḥasanūyah, bestowed a robe of honor upon him, and appointed him over the care of the Kurds.
