Translation
✧ Mention of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's reconstruction of Baghdādh In this year ʿAḍud al-Dawlah began the reconstruction of Baghdādh, which had fallen into ruin through the succession of civil strife therein. He restored its mosques and markets, disbursed funds to the imams, muezzins, scholars, Qurʾān reciters, strangers, and the weak who resorted to the mosques, obligated the owners of ruined properties to restore them, renewed what had been effaced of the canals, resumed their excavation and leveling, abolished the tolls levied on pilgrims, repaired the road from Iraq to Makkah—may God Most High ennoble it—granted stipends to the people of noble houses and honor, and to the weak residing near Makkah and Madinah. He did the like at the shrines of ʿAlī and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them), calmed the people from civil strife, and granted allowances to the jurists, traditionists, theologians, Qurʾān commentators, grammarians, poets, genealogists, physicians, arithmeticians, and engineers. He permitted his vizier Naṣr b. Hārūn, who was a Christian, to restore churches and monasteries and to disburse funds to their poor.
