✧ Mention of the arrival of Ward the Byzantine in Diyār Bakr and what happened of him In this year, Ward the Byzantine arrived in Diyār Bakr seeking the protection of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and he sent to him seeking his support against the kings of the Byzantines, offering him obedience if he should become king, and the payment of tribute. The reason for his coming was that when Armanus, the king of the Byzantines, died, he left two young sons, who became kings after him. Naqfūr, who was at that time the Domesticus, had gone out to the lands of Islam and wrought havoc there and returned. When he approached Constantinople, the death of Armanus reached him. The army gathered to him and said: 'There is no one suitable to act as regent for the two kings other than you, for they are young.' He refused, but they insisted, so he answered them, and served the two kings, married their mother, and wore the crown. Then he treated their mother harshly, so she corresponded with Ibn al-Shamshiqīq about killing Naqfūr and installing him in his place. He agreed to that, and went to him secretly with ten men, and they assassinated the Domesticus and killed him. Ibn al-Shamshiqīq took over the matter, seized Lāwīn, the brother of the Domesticus, and Wardīs b. Lāwīn, and imprisoned him in one of the fortresses. Then he marched to the districts of Syria, penetrated deep into them, and inflicted upon the Muslims what he wished, reaching Tripoli, whose people resisted him, so he besieged them. The mother of the two kings had a eunuch brother, who was at that time the vizier. He set upon Ibn al-Shamshiqīq someone who gave him poison to drink. When he felt it, he hastened to return to Constantinople and died on his way. Ward b. Munīr was one of the great army commanders and a leading patrician. He coveted the rule, corresponded with Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān and became related to him by marriage, and sought aid from the Muslims of the frontiers. They gathered to him, and he marched against the Byzantines. The two kings sent army after army against him, and he routed them. His resolve strengthened and his standing grew great. He marched on Constantinople, and the two kings feared him, so they released Wardīs b. Lāwīn, placed him in command of the armies, and sent him to fight Ward. They fought a fierce battle, and the matter between them dragged on. Then Ward was defeated and fled to the lands of Islam. He made for Diyār Bakr, encamped outside Mayyāfāriqīn, and corresponded with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, sending his brother to him, offering obedience and seeking his support. He responded to that and promised it to him. Then the two kings of the Byzantines corresponded with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and won him over, so the thought of favoring the two kings gained strength in his mind, and he turned away from supporting Ward. He wrote to Abū ʿAlī al-Tamīmī, who was at that time his deputy in Diyār Bakr, ordering the arrest of Ward and his companions. He began to devise a stratagem against him. Ward's companions gathered to him and said to him: 'The kings of the Byzantines have written to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and corresponded with him about our affair. There is no doubt that they will entice him with money and other things, and he will hand us over to them. The right course is to return to the lands of the Byzantines, either by a peace if we can, or by a war in which we expend ourselves; then either we prevail or we die honorably.' He said: 'That is not the right course, and we have seen nothing from ʿAḍud al-Dawlah but good, and it is not proper that we turn away from him before we know what he has.' So many of his companions left him. Abū ʿAlī al-Tamīmī then coveted him and corresponded with him about a meeting, and he agreed to it. When he met him, he arrested him, his son, his brother, and a group of his companions, and imprisoned them in Mayyāfāriqīn. Then he transported them to Baghdad, where they remained in prison until God granted them relief, as we shall mention. His arrest was in the year 370 AH.
