✧ Mention of the war of al-Ḥasan b. ʿImrān with the armies of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah In this year, ʿImrān b. Shāhīn died suddenly in al-Muḥarram. His rule, after the kings and caliphs sought him and exerted themselves to seize him and employed stratagems, had lasted forty years, but God did not grant them power over him, and he died a natural death. When he died, his son al-Ḥasan succeeded him. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's ambition for the districts of al-Baṭīḥah was renewed, so he dispatched the armies with his vizier al-Muṭahhar b. ʿAbd Allāh, supplying them with funds, weapons, and equipment. Al-Muṭahhar set out in Ṣafar. When he arrived, he began blocking the mouths of the rivers entering the marshes, and time and money were wasted in that. The floods came, and al-Ḥasan b. ʿImrān breached some of those dams, and the water aided him and demolished them. Whenever al-Muṭahhar blocked one side, several sides opened. Then a battle took place between him and al-Ḥasan on the water, and al-Ḥasan gained the upper hand over him. Al-Muṭahhar was quick-tempered, accustomed to sudden combat, and not accustomed to endurance, so that weighed heavily upon him. In his army with him was Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-ʿAlawī al-Kūfī, whom he suspected of corresponding with al-Ḥasan and informing him of his secrets. Al-Muṭahhar feared that his standing with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah would decline and that his enemies, such as Abū al-Wafāʾ and others, would gloat over him, so he resolved to kill himself. He took a knife and cut the arteries of his arm, and blood flowed from him. A servant of his entered and saw the blood and cried out. People entered and saw him, thinking that someone had done that to him. He spoke, and he was at his last breath, and said: "Muḥammad b. ʿUmar drove me to this." Then he died and was carried to his town Kāzarūn and buried there. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sent someone to guard the army and made peace with al-Ḥasan b. ʿImrān for a sum of money that he would pay, and he took hostages from him. Naṣr b. Hārūn became sole vizier of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. He was residing in Fārs, so ʿAḍud al-Dawlah appointed Abū al-Rayyān Ḥamad b. Muḥammad as his deputy in his presence.
