Translation

✧ Then the year 369 AH began Mention of the killing of Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān In this year, in Ṣafar, Abū Taghlib Faḍl Allāh b. Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān was killed. The reason for his killing was that he marched to Syria and reached Damascus, where Qassām had taken control and did not enable Abū Taghlib to enter it. So he camped outside the city and sent a messenger to al-ʿAzīz in Egypt seeking his aid to open Damascus for him. Then discord broke out between his companions and the companions of Qassām, so he departed to Nawā, which is one of the districts of Damascus. Thereupon a letter came to him from his messenger in Egypt stating that al-ʿAzīz wanted him to come to Egypt in person so that the armies could march with him. He refused, and messengers went back and forth. He moved to Lake Tiberias, and al-ʿAzīz dispatched an army to Damascus under a commander named al-Faḍl. He met Abū Taghlib at Tiberias and promised him, on behalf of al-ʿAzīz, everything he desired. Abū Taghlib wanted to march with him to Damascus, but al-Faḍl prevented that because of the discord that had occurred between his companions and the companions of Qassām, lest Qassām become alienated; he wanted to take the city from him peacefully. Al-Faḍl departed to Damascus but did not capture it. At Ramla, Daghfal b. al-Mufarrij b. al-Jarrāḥ al-Ṭāʾī had taken control of that region and professed obedience to al-ʿAzīz without enforcing his rulings. His following increased, and he marched against the encampments of ʿUqayl stationed in Syria to expel them from Syria. The ʿUqayl gathered around Abū Taghlib and asked for his support, while Daghfal wrote to him asking him not to intervene. Abū Taghlib mediated the matter, and they agreed to accept whatever al-ʿAzīz should rule. (Abū Taghlib then departed and encamped near the ʿUqayl.) Daghfal and al-Faḍl, the representative of al-ʿAzīz, became fearful of him, suspecting that he intended to seize those districts. Then Abū Taghlib marched to Ramla in Muḥarram of the year 369 [and three hundred], and Ibn al-Jarrāḥ and al-Faḍl had no doubt that he intended to fight them. They were both in Ramla, so al-Faḍl gathered the troops from the coastal areas, and Daghfal likewise assembled all he could (gather). The people drew up in battle lines. When ʿUqayl saw the large number of the assembled forces, they fled, and only about seven hundred men remained with Abū Taghlib, from his own ghilmān and those of his father. He was defeated, and the pursuers caught up with him. He halted to defend himself and his companions, but he was struck on the head and fell. He was taken prisoner and carried to Daghfal, who bound him and tied his arms. Al-Faḍl wanted to take him and carry him to al-ʿAzīz in Egypt, but Daghfal feared that al-ʿAzīz would favor him, as he had done with al-Fatkīn, and keep him by his side. So he killed him. Al-Faḍl blamed him for killing him, took his head, and carried it to Egypt. With him had been his sister Jamīlah bt. Nāṣir al-Dawlah and his wife, who was the daughter of his paternal uncle Sayf al-Dawlah. (When he was killed, the Banū ʿUqayl carried them to Ḥalab to Saʿd al-Dawlah b. Sayf al-Dawlah.) He took his sister and sent Jamīlah to Mosul, where she was handed over to Abū al-Wafāʾ, the deputy of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. He sent her to Baghdād, and she was confined in a chamber of the palace of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah.
