Then the year 368 AH began

عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ الزِّنْجَانِيُّ، وَيُعْرَفُ بِالْأَبْنَدُونِيِّ وَهِيَ قَرْيَةٌ مِنْ قُرَى جُرْجَانَ، ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Ḥamdān b. Mālik b. Shabīb b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Bakr al-Qaṭīʿī He was born in Muḥarram of the year 274. His father was known as Abū al-Faḍl, and Ḥamdān is a nickname; his name was actually Aḥmad. He used to live in Qaṭīʿat al-Daqīq, so he was named after it. Abū Bakr heard from Ibrāhīm b. Isḥāq and Isḥāq b. al-Ḥasan, the two Ḥarbīs, and Bishr b. Mūsā, al-Kudaymī, al-Kajjī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, and others. He was a prolific transmitter of ḥadīth and trustworthy. He transmitted from ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad the Musnad, al-Zuhd, al-Tārīkh, al-Masāʾil, and other works. Abū Bakr b. Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī said: My mother was the daughter of the brother of [Abū] ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Jaṣṣāṣ. ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad used to come to us and read to us whatever we wanted. He would seat me in his lap until someone said to him, "Does it hurt you?" He would say, "I love him." The author (may God have mercy on him) said: When al-Qaṭīʿa was flooded by the black water, some of his books were drowned, so he obtained replacements for them. Some people spoke about him regarding that and said: He wrote from a book that did not contain his own audition. But such a thing cannot be used to impugn him, because it is not possible that those books had not been read to him and collated with his original. The leading scholars transmitted from him, such as al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, al-Barqānī, Abū Nuʿaym, and al-Ḥākim. No one refrained from transmitting from him or abandoned using him as an authority. Al-Khaṭīb said: When I met Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥākim, I mentioned Ibn Mālik and spoke critically of him, but he objected to me and said: He is my shaykh, and he praised his standing. It is related from Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt that he said: Ibn Mālik changed at the end of his life, and he no longer recognized anything that was read to him. He died in this year and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb Ḥarb, near the grave of Imām Aḥmad [b. Ḥanbal]. Tamīm b. al-Muʿizz We have already mentioned that al-Muʿizz was the first to appear from the Maghrib [over the lands of Egypt]. He had children, among them this Tamīm. Tamīm possessed excellence, loyalty, generosity, eloquence, and good poetry. Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. al-Ashkarī al-Miṣrī said: I was one of the boon companions of the emir Tamīm b. al-Muʿizz, and one of those who enjoyed his greatest favor. He sent me to Baghdad, and I bought for him a stunning slave girl, among the finest to be found in beauty and singing. When she reached him, he held a banquet for his boon companions, and I was among them. Then a curtain was placed, and he commanded her to sing. She sang: A lightning flash appeared to him after passion had healed, Gleaming at night with its radiance. It appears like the edge of a cloak, and before it A difficult height, forbidding its pillars. And in another version there is an addition: He appeared to look at how it shone, but could not Look at it, for his jailer turned him away. The fire is what his ribs contain, And the water is what his eyelids release. He said: She did well, and Tamīm and everyone present were moved. Then she sang: The first of a superior man will console you for what has passed; Its beginnings are praiseworthy and its ends. God bent his two sides and composed his person Upon righteousness since his waist-wrappers were tied on him. The emir Tamīm and those present were deeply moved, then she sang: I entrust to God in Baghdad a moon of mine, In al-Karkh, from the constellation of buttons its rising place. Tamīm's emotion intensified greatly, and then he said to her: Wish for whatever you want, and your wish will be granted. She said: I wish for the emir's well-being and continued life. He said: By God, you must wish for something. She said: Will the emir honor his word in what I wish? He said: Yes. She said: I wish to sing this song in Baghdad. Tamīm's color drained, and his expression changed, and the gathering became gloomy. He rose, and we all rose. Ibn al-Ashkarī said: One of his servants caught up with me and said: Return, for the emir is calling you. I returned and found him sitting waiting for me. I greeted him and sat before him. He said: [Woe to you], did you see what we have been tested with? I said: Yes, emir. He said: I must fulfill her wish, and I trust no one else in this matter but you. Prepare to take her to Baghdad. When she sings there, send her back. I said: I hear and obey. He said: Then I rose and prepared. He ordered her to prepare, and he gave her a black slave girl of his to accompany and serve her. He ordered a she-camel and a litter, and she was placed in it. He sent her with me. Then I traveled with the caravan to Makkah, and we performed our pilgrimage. Then we joined the Iraqi caravan and traveled. When we reached al-Qādisiyya, the black slave girl came to me from her and said: My mistress says to you: Where are we? I said to her: We are stopping at al-Qādisiyya. She went back and told her. It was not long before I heard her voice rising in song: When we reached al-Qādisiyya, Where the caravans gather, And I smelled from the land of Ḥijāz The breeze of the winds of Iraq, I became certain for me and for the one I love Of a reunion and concord, And I laughed from the joy of meeting As I wept from separation. People from all sides of the caravan cried out: Seek refuge in God! Seek refuge in God! He said: Not a word was heard from her after that. He said: Then we stopped at al-Yāsiriyya, which is near Baghdad, among connected gardens. People stop there and spend the night, then leave early to enter Baghdad. When it was near dawn, the black slave girl came to me in alarm. I said: What is the matter with you? She said: My mistress is not here. I said: Where is she? She said: By God, I do not know. He said: I found no trace of her after that. I entered Baghdad, took care of my business there, and returned to him. I told him the news. It weighed heavily on him, and he grieved for it. After that, he kept remembering her and remained silent and sorrowful over her. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Marzubān, Abū Saʿīd al-Sīrāfī, the grammarian and judge He lived in Baghdad, held the office of judge there, and transmitted there from a group, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ziyād, Abū Bakr b. Durayd, and others. His father was a Magian named Behzād, and Abū Saʿīd named him ʿAbd Allāh. Raʾīs al-Ruʾasāʾ Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan said: He mentioned that Abū Saʿīd al-Sīrāfī the grammarian used to study the Qurʾān, Qurʾānic readings, Qurʾānic sciences, grammar, lexicography, jurisprudence, inheritance law, theology, poetry, prosody, rhyme, and arithmetic. He mentioned other sciences besides these. He was one of the most learned people in the grammar of the Baṣrans, and he followed the school of the people of Iraq in jurisprudence. He studied the Qurʾān under Abū Bakr b. Mujāhid and lexicography under Ibn Durayd. Both of them studied grammar with him. He studied grammar under Abū Bakr b. al-Sarrāj and Abū Bakr al-Mubramān. One of them studied the Qurʾān with him, and the other studied arithmetic with him. He was ascetic and ate only from the work of his own hands. My grandfather Abū al-Faraj mentioned about him that he did not go out to the court of the mighty ruler or to the teaching assembly every day until after he had copied ten leaves, for which he received ten dirhams as his fee, enough for his daily expenses, and then he went out. Ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: It was mentioned about him that he held Muʿtazilī views, but we did not see him display anything of that. He was virtuous and chaste. Al-Khaṭīb said: I heard al-Barqānī mention al-Ābんどūnī and say: He was a ḥadīth scholar who had eaten his salt. He was ascetic. He would not transmit to more than one person alone. He was asked about that, and he said: The people of ḥadīth have bad manners. When they gather for audition, they talk among themselves, and I cannot bear that. Al-Barqānī said: One day he handed me a cup containing dry pieces of bread and ordered me to carry it to the bean seller so that he could pour bean broth over it. I did that. When the bean seller poured the water from the beans into the cup, two or three beans came out. He said: The bean seller hurried to remove them. I said to him: Woe to you, what is the amount of this that you remove them from the cup? He said: This shaykh gives me a dāniq each month to moisten his dry pieces of bread. How could I give him beans along with the water? Al-Barqānī went on describing his frugality and asceticism, and he said: He was a master among the ḥadīth scholars.
