✧ Mention of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah’s seizure of the kingdom of the Banū Ḥamdān When Abū Taghlib and Bakhtiyār were defeated, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched toward al-Mawṣil, and he took possession of it on the twelfth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah, along with what was connected to it. Abū Taghlib supposed that, as others before him had done, he would remain a short while, then be compelled to a settlement and return. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was more resolute than that, for when he made for al-Mawṣil he carried with him provisions and fodder, and men who knew the province of al-Mawṣil and its districts. He stayed in al-Mawṣil at ease, and sent out raiding parties in pursuit of Abū Taghlib. Abū Taghlib sent asking to hold the lands as a tax-farmer, but ʿAḍud al-Dawlah would not grant him that, saying: “These lands are dearer to me than al-ʿIrāq.” With Abū Taghlib were al-Marzubān b. Bakhtiyār, Abū Isḥāq and Abū Ṭāhir the two sons of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, their mother—who was the mother of Bakhtiyār—and their households. Abū Taghlib marched to Naṣībīn, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah dispatched a raiding party under his chamberlain Abū Ḥarb Ṭaghān to Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar, and sent another raiding party in pursuit of Abū Taghlib under Abū al-Wafāʾ Ṭāhir b. Muḥammad by way of Sinjār. Abū Taghlib travelled hard until he reached Mayyāfāriqīn and stayed there with his family. When news of Abū al-Wafāʾ’s advance reached him, he moved toward Badlīs with the women and other members of his household. Abū al-Wafāʾ reached Mayyāfāriqīn, but it was shut against him, being one of the ancient fortresses of the Byzantines, so he left it and sought Abū Taghlib. Abū Taghlib had turned from Arzan al-Rūm to al-Ḥusaniyyah in the districts of al-Jazīrah, and gone up to the fortress of Kawāshā and other of his fortresses, taking the wealth he had stored in them. Abū al-Wafāʾ returned to Mayyāfāriqīn and besieged it. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah learned that Abū Taghlib had come to his fortresses, he marched against him in person but did not catch him. Most of Abū Taghlib’s companions, however, sought safe-conduct from ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and he returned to al-Mawṣil. He sent an army after Abū Taghlib under one of his commanders named Ṭaghān. Abū Taghlib made his way by rough tracks to Badlīs, thinking no one would follow him, but Ṭaghān pursued him, so he fled from Badlīs and made for the land of the Byzantines to join their king known as Ward al-Rūmī. He was not of the royal house; he had made himself king over them by force, and the Byzantines had split over him and set up another of the sons of their kings. War between them dragged on. This Ward had sought a marriage alliance with Abū Taghlib to strengthen himself through him, and it was decreed that Abū Taghlib would need to seek his support. When Abū Taghlib departed from Badlīs, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah’s troops caught up with him. They were eager to seize the wealth he had with him, for they had heard how great it was. When they came upon him, their commander called out: “Do not touch this wealth; it belongs to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah.” So they slackened in the fighting. When Abū Taghlib saw their slackness, he charged them and they were routed. He inflicted a great slaughter on them, and those who escaped went to the fortress of Ziyād, now known as Khartabirtā. The aforementioned Ward sent to him telling him of the situation he faced with the Byzantines gathering against him, asking for reinforcements, and saying: “When I am done, I will return to you.” Abū Taghlib sent him a band of his troops. It happened that Ward was defeated, and when Abū Taghlib learned of that he despaired of his aid and returned to the lands of Islam, encamping at Āmid, where he stayed two months until Mayyāfāriqīn was taken.
