Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of Bakhtiyār When Bakhtiyār departed from Baghdādh, he resolved to head for Syria, and with him was the son of Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān. When Bakhtiyār reached ʿUkbarā, Ḥamdān made heading for al-Mawṣil seem attractive to him (and its abundant wealth) and made him covet it, saying that it was better than Syria and easier. So Bakhtiyār marched toward al-Mawṣil. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had made him swear that he would not aim for the province of Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān, because of friendship and correspondence that existed between them, but he broke his oath and headed there. When he reached Takrīt, messengers of Abū Taghlib came to him asking him to seize his brother Ḥamdān and hand him over to him; if he did so, Abū Taghlib would come in person with his armies, fight ʿAḍud al-Dawlah alongside him, and restore him to his kingship over Baghdādh. So Bakhtiyār seized Ḥamdān and handed him over to Abū Taghlib's deputies, and he imprisoned him in one of his fortresses. Bakhtiyār marched to al-Ḥadīthah and met with Abū Taghlib, and they both marched toward Iraq. Abū Taghlib had with him about twenty thousand fighting men. When news of that reached ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, he marched from Baghdādh toward them, and they met at Qaṣr al-Jiṣṣ near Takrīt on the eighteenth of Shawwāl. He defeated them and captured Bakhtiyār. Bakhtiyār was brought before ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, but he did not grant him permission to enter his presence; he ordered him executed, and he was killed. This was on the advice of Abū al-Wafāʾ Ṭāhir b. Ibrāhīm. A great many of his companions were killed. After that, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's rule became firmly established. (Bakhtiyār's age was thirty-six years, and he reigned eleven years and some months.)
