Translation
✧ Then the year 367 AH began Account of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's seizure of Iraq In this year, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched to Baghdādh, and sent to Bakhtiyār, summoning him to obedience to him, and to depart from Iraq to whichever direction he wished, and he guaranteed to assist him with what he needed of money, weapons, and other than that. Bakhtiyār's companions differed over him regarding the response to that, but he responded to it due to the weakness of his own self, so ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sent a robe of honor to him, and he donned it, and he sent to him requesting Ibn Baqiyyah from him, so he gouged out his eyes and sent him to him. (And Bakhtiyār equipped himself with what ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had sent to him), and he departed from Baghdādh, resolved to head for Syria, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched and entered Baghdādh, and he was prayed for in the Friday sermon there, and before that no one had been prayed for in the Friday sermon in Baghdādh, and three drum beats were struck at his gate, and the custom of those who preceded him had not followed that, and he ordered that Ibn Baqiyyah be thrown between the legs of the elephants so that they would kill him, and that was done to him, and the elephants trampled him until they killed him, and he was crucified at the top of the bridge in Shawwāl of this year, and Abū al-Ḥasan al-Anbārī lamented him with fine verses, in their meaning, which are: Loftiness in life and in death is a true one of the miracles It is as if the people around you, when they stood, were the delegations of your generosity on the days of gifts It is as if you were standing among them as a preacher, while all of them were standing for prayer You stretched out your hands toward them in emulation, like their stretching them out to them in bestowals And when the belly of the earth became too narrow to contain your loftiness after death, they made the air your grave, and appointed as substitutes for the shrouds the garment of the dust-laden winds Because of your greatness in souls, you spend the night guarded by trustworthy guards and keepers And fires are kindled near you at night, just as you were in the days of life And I never saw before your trunk any trunk that was able to embrace noble qualities You mounted a riding beast which Zayd had mounted before, when he was raised on it in bygone years And they are many. His saying, 'Zayd mounted it,' meaning Zayd b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, when he was killed and crucified in the days of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and it has been mentioned. And Ibn Baqiyyah remained crucified until the days of Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah, then he was taken down from his trunk and buried.
