Nujayd b. Aḥmad b. Yūsuf b. Sālim, Abū ʿUmar al-Sulamī He accompanied Abū ʿUthmān and met al-Junayd, and he heard ḥadīth and transmitted it, and he was trustworthy (thiqah), and he died in this year. Ismāʿīl b. Nujayd used to say: "He whose sight refines you; know that he is not refined." Abū Saʿīd b. Abī Bakr b. Abī ʿUthmān said: My grandfather sought something for one of the frontier regions (al-thughūr), and that was delayed for him, and he became distressed and wept before the people. Then Abū ʿAmr b. Nujayd came to him after nightfall (al-ʿatamah), carrying a purse containing two thousand dirhams, and said: "Apply this to the matter that was delayed." Abū ʿUthmān rejoiced at that and prayed for him. When Abū ʿUthmān sat, he said: "O people, I have hoped for Abū ʿAmr because of what he did, for he acted on behalf of the community in that matter and bore such and such; may God reward him on my behalf with good." Then Abū ʿAmr stood before the people and said: "I only made that from my mother's wealth, and she is not consenting; so it ought to be returned to me so that I may return it to her." Abū ʿUthmān ordered that the purse be brought out and returned to him before the people, and the people dispersed. When night fell upon him, he came to Abū ʿUthmān at the same hour and said: "It is possible that this be applied to that matter without anyone but us knowing of it." Abū ʿUthmān wept, and after that he used to say: "I fear Abū ʿAmr's roar (hamr)." Al-Ḥasan b. Buwayh, Abū ʿAlī Rukn al-Dawlah We have mentioned that he divided the kingdoms among his three sons. I wrote down a little from him, and it was mentioned to me that his books were destroyed. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year 366 AH and was buried in the cemetery of the Anṣār near his father. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Kinānah, Abū Bakr al-Muʾaddib He related from Abū Muslim al-Kajjī and Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Kudaymī. He said: Muḥammad b. al-Muʾaddib was not, in my view, reliable (bi-dhāka); there was laxity (tasāhul) in him. Al-Khaṭīb said: I was told from Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt that he said: Abū Bakr b. al-Muʾaddib died in Jumādā al-Ūlā in the year 366 AH, and he was of average standing (qarīb al-amr). Waṣīf al-Nāshiʾ, known as al-Khallāl, author of many elegies (marāthī) for the People of the House (ahl al-bayt). Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf b. al-Ḥasan al-Jannābī In this year died Abū Yaʿqūb Yūsuf b. al-Ḥasan al-Jannābī, ruler of Hajar. Abū Muḥammad al-Qirmiṭī In this year occurred the death of: Al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. Abī Saʿīd al-Jannābī, Abū Muḥammad al-Qirmiṭī. Ibn ʿAsākir said: The name of Abū Saʿīd is al-Ḥasan b. Bahrām, and it is said: al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. al-Ḥasan b. Yūsuf b. Kūdhkār. It is said that his origin is from the Persians. He said: This Abū Muḥammad is known as al-Aʿṣam. He said: He was born in al-Aḥsāʾ in the year 278 AH. He took control of Syria (al-Shām) in the year 357 AH, then returned to al-Aḥsāʾ after a year, then returned to Damascus in the year 360 AH. He defeated the army of Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ, the first to act as deputy over Syria for al-Muʿizz al-Fāṭimī, and killed him. Then he headed to Egypt and besieged it at the beginning of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 361 AH, and continued besieging it for months. He had appointed Ẓālim b. Mawhūb al-ʿUqaylī as his deputy over Damascus. Then he returned to al-Aḥsāʾ, then came back to al-Ramlah and died there in this year, having reached nearly ninety years old, while he was showing obedience to ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh b. al-Muṭīʿ. Ibn ʿAsākir cited for him fine, splendid, excellent poems. Among them is what he wrote to Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ before the war between them: Letters are an excuse, and messengers inform; truth is followed, and good is present. War is resting, and horses are standing on three legs; peace is commonplace, and shade is extended. If you repent, your repentance is accepted; but if you refuse, then this saddle is strapped On the backs of riding camels; either you bring us to Damascus with its gate demolished and cast down, Or I am a man whose concern and desire is not a drum that resounds, nor a flute, nor a lute, Nor seclusion with wine and incense burner, and a coquettish woman with her dalliance and reproof, Nor do I spend the night full-bellied from satiety while my companion is empty-bellied and exhausted, Nor has the world ever raised me to greed one day, nor have its promises deceived me. And from his poetry also: O dweller of the lofty town, exalting yourself With its fortresses, its strongholds, and its caves, There is no might except for him who is mighty by himself, And by his horses, his footmen, and his swords, And by a white dome that has been pitched upon The height of the tents, with his neighbor and his ally. A people who, when war intensifies, lay low the enemies And heal souls with his striking and his standing firm. He was not content with inherited glory for himself Until his inherited glory was raised high by his newly acquired glory. Manṣūr b. Nūḥ al-Sāmānī In the middle of Shawwāl of this year, the emir Manṣūr b. Nūḥ al-Sāmānī—ruler of the lands of Khurāsān—died in Bukhārā. His rule lasted fifteen years, and after him his son Abū al-Qāsim Nūḥ took charge. His age at that time was thirteen years, and he was given the title al-Manṣūr.
