✧ Mention of the arrest of Abu al-Fath b. al-ʿAmid In this year, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah arrested Abu al-Fath b. al-ʿAmid, the vizier of his father, put out his one eye, and cut off his nose. The reason for this was that when Abu al-Fath was in Baghdad with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, as we have explained, and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah set out toward Fars, he had ordered Abu al-Fath to hasten the departure from Baghdad to al-Rayy, but he disobeyed him and stayed, being pleased with residing in Baghdad. He drank with Bakhtiyar, inclined toward him, and acquired estates and houses in Baghdad, resolving to return to them when Rukn al-Dawlah died. Then he began corresponding with Bakhtiyar about matters that displeased ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. He had a deputy who presented them to Bakhtiyar, and that deputy would inform ʿAḍud al-Dawlah of them hour by hour. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah came to power after his father's death, he wrote to his brother Fakhr al-Dawlah in al-Rayy ordering him to arrest him and his family and his companions. He did that, and the house of al-ʿAmid was uprooted at his hand, just as his father al-Faḍl had feared. On the night of his arrest, Abu al-Fath had spent the evening happy. He brought in drinking companions and singers, and displayed gold vessels, fine glass, and kinds of perfume the like of which no one else possessed. They drank, and he composed poetry that was sung to him, which is: I called desire and called high rank; when they answered, I called the cup, and said to the days of youth's prime: 'Come to me, for this is the time of joy.' When a man attains his hopes, he has no further request after them. When it was sung in the poem, he found it pleasing, and he drank over it until he became drunk. Then he rose and said to his servants, 'Leave the gathering as it is so that we may drink in the morning tomorrow,' and he said to his drinking companions, 'Come to me early tomorrow to drink, and do not be late.' The companions departed, and he entered his bedroom. At dawn, Muʾayyid al-Dawlah summoned him and arrested him, and sent to his house and seized everything in it, including that gathering with all it contained.
