✧ Mention of the death of the judge Mundhir al-Ballūṭī In this year, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, the judge Mundhir b. Saʿīd al-Ballūṭī, Abū al-Ḥākim, chief judge of al-Andalus, died. He was an imam, a jurist, a preacher, a poet, eloquent, of firm religion. He entered upon ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nāṣir, ruler of al-Andalus, after he had finished building al-Zahrāʾ and its palaces, and he had sat in a dome adorned with gold and exquisite construction the like of which had never been achieved, and with him were a group of notables. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nāṣir said: "Has it reached you that anyone has built the like of this building?" The group said to him: "We have not seen nor heard of its like," and they praised it and exaggerated, while the judge was silent, looking down. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān asked him to speak, and the judge wept, and his tears fell upon his beard, and he said: "By God, I did not think that Satan—may God Almighty disgrace him—would reach such a point with you, nor that you would enable him to lead you in this manner, despite what God has given you and favored you with, until he has brought you down to the stations of the disbelievers." ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to him: "Consider what you say; how has he brought me down to the station of the disbelievers?" He said: "God Almighty said: 'And were it not that mankind would be one community, We would have made for those who disbelieve in the Most Merciful roofs of silver for their houses and stairways upon which they ascend, and doors for their houses and couches upon which they recline, and ornament' up to His saying: 'and the Hereafter with your Lord is for the righteous.'" ʿAbd al-Raḥmān was struck silent and wept, and said: "May God reward you well, and may He multiply the likes of you among the Muslims." The reports of this judge are many and very good. Among them: that the people suffered drought and wanted to go out to pray for rain. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent to him ordering him to go out. The judge said to the messenger: "Would that I knew what the emir is doing on this day of ours?" He said: "I have never seen him more humble than he is now; he has put on rough clothes, and spread dust on the ground, and placed it on his head and beard, and wept, and confessed his sins, and says: 'This forelock of mine is in Your hands; do You see fit to punish these creatures because of me?'" The judge said: "O boy, carry the raincoat with you, for God has permitted rain for us. When the tyrant of the earth is humble, the Tyrant of heaven has mercy." So he went out and prayed for rain with the people. When he ascended the pulpit and saw the people gazing at him with their eyes, he said: "'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy for Himself: that whoever of you does evil in ignorance then repents after it and makes amends'" the verse, and he repeated it. The people burst into weeping and repentance, and he completed his sermon, and the people were given rain.
