Translation

✧ Mention of the siege of Cassenta and other places In this year the amir of Sicily, Abu al-Qasim b. al-Husayn b. ʿAli b. Abi al-Husayn, marched with the Muslim armies, accompanied by a group of reformers and scholars, and encamped before the city of Messina in Ramadan. The enemy fled from it, and the Muslims went on to Cassenta and besieged it for some days. Its people asked for safe-conduct, and he granted it to them, took money from them, and departed from it to the castle of Gallo, doing likewise with it and with others. He ordered his brother al-Qasim to take the fleet to the vicinity of Barbula and to send out raiding parties throughout all Calabria. He did so, gaining much booty, killing and taking captives. Then he and his brother returned to the city. When the year 366 AH came, Abu al-Qasim ordered the rebuilding of Rametta, which had been ruined before that, resumed raiding, gathered the armies, and marched to encamp before the castle of Igathe. Its people asked for safe-conduct, and he granted it to them; they surrendered the castle to him with all that was in it. He then departed to the city of Taranto, and saw that its people had fled from it and locked its gates. The men climbed the wall, opened the gates, and the people entered. The amir ordered it to be demolished, so it was demolished and burned. He sent out raiding parties who reached Acerenza and other places, while he himself encamped before the city of Ardalia and fought it. Its people offered him money, on which he made peace with them, and then returned to the city.
