✧ Mention of the war of Yūsuf Bulukkīn with Zanātah and others in Ifrīqiyah In this year Khazarūn b. Falfūl b. Khazar al-Zanātī gathered a large force and marched to Sijilmāsah. Its lord met him in Ramaḍān, and Khazarūn killed him and took possession of Sijilmāsah, seizing from it great wealth and equipment. He sent the head of its lord to al-Andalus. The affair of Zanātah grew great, and its dominion became strong. Bulukkīn was at Sabtah. He had marched to Fās, Sijilmāsah, and the land of al-Habṭ, conquered all of it, and expelled from it the agents of the Banū Umayyah. Zanātah fled from him, and many of them took refuge in Sabtah, which belonged to the Umayyad lord of al-Andalus. On his way there were dense thickets of brushwood that could not be traversed, so he ordered them cut and burned, and they were cut and burned until they became a road for the army. Then he went himself until he overlooked Sabtah from a mountain dominating it. He stood for half a day to see from which direction he might besiege and fight it. He saw that it could be taken only with a fleet, so its people feared him greatly. Then he turned away from it toward al-Baṣrah, a fine city called Buṣrah in the Maghrib. When Zanātah heard of him, they moved to the far reaches of the west, into the sands and deserts, fleeing from him. Yūsuf entered al-Baṣrah, which the lord of al-Andalus had built up with great construction, and he ordered it demolished and plundered. Then he marched to the land of Barghawāṭah. Their king was ʿAbs b. Umm al-Anṣār, a charlatan and sorcerer who claimed prophethood. They obeyed him in everything he commanded them, and he made for them a religious law. Bulukkīn raided him, and there were great wars between them beyond description. In the end victory belonged to Bulukkīn, and God killed ʿAbs b. Umm al-Anṣār. He routed his armies, and they were slain in great numbers. He took captive from their women and children an innumerable multitude and sent them to Ifrīqiyah. The people of Ifrīqiyah said that never had such captives come to them before. Yūsuf Bulukkīn remained in that region, subduing its people, while the people of Sabtah were in fear of him and Zanātah were fleeing in the sands until the year 373 AH.
