Then the year 364 AH began

قَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ: حُدِّثْتُ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ بْنِ ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. Isḥāq b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Naʿʿālī He heard (ḥadīth from) Abū Khalīfah, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, and others. Al-Barqānī narrated from him and said: "He is truthful (ṣadūq)." He died on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Naḥr) of this year. Sabuktakīn, the chamberlain (ḥājib) of Muʿizz al-Dawlah Al-Ṭāʾiʿ bestowed upon him a robe of honor, collared him, and bracelet(ed) him, and gave him the title Naṣr al-Dawlah. Then Sabuktakīn fell from his horse and broke his rib. He summoned Ibn al-Ṣalt, the bone-setter, who set his rib and attended him until he recovered. He then enriched him and gave him, on the day he entered him into the bathhouse, a thousand dinars, a horse, a riding beast, and a robe of honor. He was able to ride, to stand in prayer, and to prostrate, but was unable to bow (rukūʿ). He would say to his physician: "When I remember my recovery at your hands, I rejoice in you and cannot repay you; and when I remember your feet upon my back, my anger against you intensifies." He died on Tuesday, seven nights remaining of al-Muḥarram. The duration of his emirate was two months and thirteen days. His coffin was carried to Baghdad and he was buried in the burial plot of his daughter in al-Mukharrim. He left behind a million Muṭīʿī dinars, ten million dirhams, two chests containing jewels, and sixty chests, forty-five of which contained vessels of gold and silver and fifteen of which contained crystal and muḥkam (finished goods); and one hundred and thirty gold saddles (markab), fifty of which weighed a thousand mithqals each; and six hundred silver saddles; and four thousand garments of silk brocade (dībāj); and ten thousand garments of Dabīqī and ʿAttābī cloth, and other things; and three hundred bales packed with furnishings; and three thousand head of riding beasts and mules; and a thousand head of camels; and three hundred slave boys [trained in household service] and forty-four male servants, besides what he left with Abū Bakr al-Bazzāz, his associate. This Sabuktakīn owned Dār al-Mamlakah (the Palace of the Kingdom), which exists today. Hilāl b. al-Muḥsin said: The Dār al-Mamlakah, which is in upper al-Mukharrim, opposite al-Faraḍah, belonged to Sabuktakīn, the slave (ghulām) of Muʿizz al-Dawlah. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah demolished most of it, and left nothing except the sixty-cubit hall (al-bayt al-sittīnī), which is in the middle of porticoes; from its porticoes are porticoes on its sides: domed porticoes. Its western doors open onto the Tigris, and its eastern doors open onto a courtyard, behind which is an orchard with palm trees and other trees. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah made the palace, in which this hall is located, the public palace (Dār al-ʿĀmmah), with the hall designated for the seating of the viziers, and the adjoining porticoes and domes as places for the dīwāns, and the courtyard as a sleeping place for the Daylam of the guard (nawbah) on summer nights. Hilāl said: "This palace, with all it contains of the aforementioned hall and porticoes, is in ruins. Indeed, I witnessed the assembly of the viziers therein, and the gathering of those who sought them and attended upon them. Jalāl al-Dawlah made it into a stable, lodging his mounts and their grooms there. As for what ʿAḍud al-Dawlah built, and his sons after him, of this palace, it remains intact despite its dilapidation." Ibn Thābit said: When Tughril Bek the Ghuzz entered Baghdad and took possession of it, he rebuilt this palace and renewed much of what [was] ruined of it in the year 448 AH. It remained thus until the year 450 AH, then it burned, and most of its furnishings were saved. Then it was rebuilt afterward and restored as it had been, and it is ruined [now]. He said: [Al-Qāḍī] Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin said: I heard my father say: I walked with the king ʿAḍud al-Dawlah in Dār al-Mamlakah in al-Mukharrim, which had previously been the palace of Sabuktakīn, the chamberlain of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, while he was inspecting what had been built and demolished of it. He had wanted to increase the Sabuktakīnī square by some cubits to turn it into an orchard, to replace the earth with sand, and to cast the earth beneath the roshan (projecting balcony) onto the Tigris. He had purchased many houses, large and small, demolished them, and toppled their walls using elephants to reduce the labor, and added their plots to the square. Their area was like the square twice over, and he built a retaining wall (masnāh) over all of it. On that day, having witnessed what he witnessed, he said to me: "Do you know, O qāḍī, how much has been spent on the earth that has been excavated to this point, and on the construction of this flimsy retaining wall, along with the price of the houses that were purchased and added?" I said: "I suppose it is a great deal." He said to me: "Up to this time it is seven hundred thousand sound (ṣiḥāḥ) dirhams, and the like thereof will be needed once or twice more until the digging of the earth is completed and sand takes its place, level with the surface of the orchard." When he had finished that and the orchard became a white ground with nothing in it of planting or vegetation, he said: "More than two million dirhams have been spent on this until it became thus." Then he considered making the irrigation of the orchard by means of waterwheels (dawālīb) that he would set up on the Tigris, and he knew that the waterwheels would not suffice. So he dispatched engineers to the canals that are outside the eastern side of the City of Peace (Madīnat al-Salām), to derive from them a canal whose water would flow to his palace. They did not find what he wanted except in the Khāliṣ Canal. The land between the city and it was elevated, so it was possible for the water to flow on a certain measure without causing harm. He constructed two great mounds that were level with the water surface of the Khāliṣ and rose above the desert ground by some cubits, and dug a canal in their midst, making for it two side channels (khawrān) on either side. He tamped all of it with elephants, much tamping, until it became strong, firm, hard, and compact. When he reached the dwellings of the city and wanted to bring the canal to his palace, he went to the houses of al-Silsilah, leveled their ground with a powerful leveling, raised the doors of the houses and secured them, and built the sides of the canal along the length of the city with baked brick, quicklime, and lime plaster, until the water reached the palace and irrigated the orchard. My father said: The expenditure on the construction of the orchard and the bringing of water to it, as I heard from the entourage of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, reached five million dirhams. And perhaps he spent on the buildings of the palace what I suppose was the like thereof. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was resolved to demolish the houses between his palace and al-Ẓāhir and to connect the palace to al-Ẓāhir, but he died before that. ʿAbd al-Salām b. Muḥammad b. Abī Mūsā, Abū al-Qāsim al-Mukharrimī al-Ṣūfī He traveled widely, met the shaykhs, and narrated from Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd and Abū ʿArūbah al-Ḥarrānī. Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī narrated from him. He was trustworthy (thiqah), of good character, and ascetic. He resided in Makkah for years and died there in this year. Al-Faḍl al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh, Commander of the Faithful [son of al-Muqtadir] We have mentioned that he abdicated on account of an illness that afflicted him, appointed his son al-Ṭāʾiʿ, and called the judges and notaries to witness against himself. His caliphate lasted twenty-nine years, four months, and twenty-one days. Al-Ṭāʾiʿ went out to Wāsiṭ carrying with him his father al-Muṭīʿ, and he died in the army at Dayr al-ʿĀqūl in Muḥarram of this year. He was sixty-three years old. He was carried to Baghdad and buried in the burial plot of his grandmother, the mother of al-Muqtadir. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad, Abū Bakr al-Shāhid, known as al-Rabīʿī He narrated from Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī and others. Abū al-Qāsim ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿUmar al-Baqqāl and others narrated from him. Ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: "He died in the year 364 AH," and there is some doubt about that. Muḥammad b. Badr, Abū Bakr His father was known as Badr al-Ḥammāmī, the slave (ghulām) of Ibn Ṭūlūn, and was called Badr al-Kabīr. He was amir over all the lands of Fārs, and died in those regions. His son Muḥammad took his place in the region, and the sultan wrote to him granting him the governorship in place of his father, and wrote to the commanders who were with him to obey and submit to him. He was amir over the lands of Fārs for a period. Then he came to Baghdad and narrated there from Bakr b. Sahl al-Dimyāṭī, Ḥammād b. Mudrik, and others. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Abū Nuʿaym [al-Aṣbahānī], and others narrated from him. Abū Nuʿaym said: "Trustworthy (thiqah), sound in audition (ṣaḥīḥ al-samāʿ)." Aḥmad b. ʿAlī said: I was told on the authority of Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt, who said: "Muḥammad b. Badr al-Ḥammāmī died in Rajab of the year 364 AH. He was trustworthy, God willing, as far as I know, but he was not of the people of this discipline—meaning ḥadīth—nor did he excel in it. He held a doctrine of Shīʿism (rafḍ)." Aḥmad said: "His death was in Baghdad." Muḥammad b. Thābit b. Aḥmad, Abū Bakr al-Wāsiṭī He came to Baghdad and narrated there from ʿAbbās al-Dūrī and others. Ibn Shāhīn and al-Kattānī narrated from him. He was trustworthy (thiqah).
