Tarikh (al-Tabari) 4352

Then the year 364 AH began

✧ Mention of Bakhtiyār's return to his kingdom When Bakhtiyār was seized, his son al-Marzubān was in al-Baṣrah as its governor. When news of his father's arrest reached him, he fortified himself there against ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and wrote to Rukn al-Dawlah complaining of what had befallen his father and his uncles at the hands of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and Abū al-Fatḥ b. al-ʿAmīd, and mentioning the stratagem that had been carried out against him. When Rukn al-Dawlah heard that, he threw himself from his bed to the ground and rolled upon it, and refrained from eating and drinking for several days, and fell ill with an illness from which he did not recover for the rest of his life. Muḥammad b. Baqiyyah, after Bakhtiyār, had served ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and had taken from him the city of Wāsiṭ and its districts as a tax farm. When he went there, he renounced obedience to al-Dawlah, rebelled against him, showed displeasure at Bakhtiyār's arrest, corresponded with ʿImrān b. Shāhīn, sought his assistance, and warned him of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's treachery. ʿImrān responded favorably to what he requested. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah had given Sahl b. Bishr, the vizier of al-Fatkīn, the land of al-Ahwāz as a tax farm and had released him from Bakhtiyār's prison. Muḥammad b. Baqiyyah wrote to him and sought to win him over, and he responded. When Ibn Baqiyyah rebelled, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sent a strong army against him. Ibn Baqiyyah went out against them on the water with a force that ʿImrān had dispatched to him. The men of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah were routed in the most shameful manner. He wrote to Rukn al-Dawlah about his situation and Bakhtiyār's situation. Rukn al-Dawlah wrote to him, to al-Marzubān, and to others who had taken up Bakhtiyār's cause, commanding them to stand firm and be patient, and informing them that he would march to Iraq to expel ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and restore Bakhtiyār. The districts became disturbed against ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and enemies grew bold against him once they learned of his father's disapproval of him. Supplies from Fārs and the sea were cut off from him, and nothing remained in his hand except the citadel of Baghdādh. The common people coveted it, and he was on the verge of what he disliked. He saw fit to send Abū al-Fatḥ b. al-ʿAmīd with a message to his father, informing him of what had happened to him and what funds he had distributed, that Bakhtiyār had become too weak to guard the lands, and that if he were restored to his former state, the kingdom and the caliphate would depart from them and they would be ruined. He asked that he refrain from supporting Bakhtiyār. He said to Abū al-Fatḥ: "If he agrees to what you want from him, then good; otherwise tell him: I will take from you the tax farms of Iraq as a guarantee, and I will deliver to you every year thirty million dirhams. I will send Bakhtiyār and his two brothers to you so that you may give them the choice: if they choose they may stay away from you, and if they choose some of the lands of Fārs I will hand them over to them and be generous to them. If you prefer to come yourself to Iraq to manage the caliphate and send Bakhtiyār to al-Rayy while I return to Fārs, the matter is yours." He said to Ibn al-ʿAmīd: "If he agrees to what you have told him, then good; otherwise tell him: O my lord and father, your judgment and word are accepted, but there is no way to release these people after their open hostility and display of enmity. They will fight me to the utmost of their ability, and discord will spread and the house will be forever divided. If you accept what I have mentioned, then I am the obedient servant. If you refuse and order me to withdraw, then I will kill Bakhtiyār and his two brothers, arrest everyone I suspect of inclining toward them, leave Iraq, and abandon the lands without a ruler for whoever happens to manage them." Ibn al-ʿAmīd feared to carry this message himself and suggested that someone else carry it, while he would go after him and act as one advising Rukn al-Dawlah to grant what was requested. So ʿAḍud al-Dawlah sent a messenger with this message, and after him sent Ibn al-ʿAmīd on swift camels. When the messenger came before Rukn al-Dawlah and mentioned part of the message, he leapt at him to kill him, and the man fled from before him. Then after his anger subsided he called him back and said: "Tell so-and-so—meaning ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, calling him by a name other than his own and reviling him—you went out to aid your cousin and out of greed for his kingdom. Did you not know that I aided al-Ḥasan b. al-Fayrazān, who is unrelated to me, many times, risking my kingdom and my life? When I restored his lands to him, I accepted nothing from him worth even a single dirham. Then Ibrāhīm b. al-Marzubān departed, and I restored him to Adharbayjān and sent my vizier and my armies to support him, and I took not a single dirham from him—all of that seeking a good reputation and preserving chivalry. Do you want to reproach me over two dirhams that you yourself spent on me and on my brother's sons, and then covet their kingdoms and threaten me with killing them?" The messenger returned, and Ibn al-ʿAmīd arrived, but he was kept from his presence and his words were not heard. He threatened him with destruction and sent to him saying: "I will leave you and that doer—meaning ʿAḍud al-Dawlah—to strive as hard as you can. Then I will not come out against you except with three hundred swift camels, each bearing a man. Then stand firm if you wish, for by God I will fight you only with those nearest to you." Rukn al-Dawlah used to say: "I see my brother Muʿizz al-Dawlah every night in a dream, biting his fingertips and saying: 'O my brother, is this how you promised me to look after my sons?'" Rukn al-Dawlah loved his brother intensely because he had raised him, and he was to him like a son. Then people interceded for Ibn al-ʿAmīd and mediated between him and Rukn al-Dawlah, saying: "Ibn al-ʿAmīd undertook this message only as a means of escape from ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and to reach you so that you may command what you see fit." So he permitted him to come into his presence. He met with him and guaranteed him that ʿAḍud al-Dawlah would return to Fārs and that Bakhtiyār would be confirmed in Iraq. So he sent him back to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, informing him of the true state of affairs. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah saw matters turning against him from every side, he resolved to go to Fārs and restore Bakhtiyār. He brought him out of his prison, bestowed robes of honor upon him, and stipulated that he would be his deputy in Iraq, that he would give the khuṭbah in his name, and that he would make his brother Abū Isḥāq commander of the army because of Bakhtiyār's weakness. He returned to them all that had belonged to them, and he set out for Fārs in Shawwāl of this year. He ordered Abū al-Fatḥ b. al-ʿAmīd, his father's vizier, to join him after three days. When ʿAḍud al-Dawlah departed, Ibn al-ʿAmīd stayed with Bakhtiyār, occupying himself with pleasures and with the play to which Bakhtiyār was addicted. They secretly agreed that if Rukn al-Dawlah died, he would go to him and serve as his vizier. This reached ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and became the cause of Ibn al-ʿAmīd's destruction, as we shall mention. Bakhtiyār established himself in Baghdādh, but did not abide by the covenants made with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. When Bakhtiyār's position became firm, he sent Ibn Baqiyyah behind him, and he came into his presence and deepened the estrangement between Bakhtiyār and ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. Strife arose after ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's departure. Ibn Baqiyyah won over the troops and collected much wealth into his treasury. Whenever Bakhtiyār demanded money from him, he set the soldiers upon him to demand it. This became burdensome to Bakhtiyār, and he consulted about a calamity to bring upon him. That reached Ibn Baqiyyah, who reproached Bakhtiyār for it. He denied it and swore to him, and Ibn Baqiyyah became wary of him.
