Abī al-ʿAlāʾ, Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān, Abū Firās al-ʿAdawī the poet. He had courage and generosity, and he had poetry of the utmost beauty. Sayf al-Dawlah appointed him over Manbij and Ḥarrān and their districts. He went out to fight the Byzantines, slew and killed, and was taken captive for two years. Then Sayf al-Dawlah ransomed him. It is said that he was killed after that, [before reaching forty years of age], and Sayf al-Dawlah mourned him. From Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Baṭṭah, who said: Al-Ḥasan b. Saʿīd al-Maqdisī recited to me, saying: Muḥammad b. Shujāʿ al-Jīlī recited to me, saying: Abū Firās b. Ḥamdān recited to me his own verses: "A man is a target of misfortunes that do not cease until his body is buried in his grave; so one is deferred and meets death in another, and one is hastened and meets death in himself." He said: An Arab bedouin was with Abū Firās, and he said to him: "Respond to this with its like," so he said: "Whoever wishes for long life, let him put on patience for the loss of his loved ones; and whoever is hastened will see in himself what he wishes for his enemies." He took this from the saying of the sage: "Whoever's life is long loses his loved ones, and whoever's life is short, his misfortune is in himself." And from the saying of another: "Whoever loves length of survival, let him take for misfortunes a hardy heart." Abū al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār said: The qāḍī Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin al-Tanūkhī recited to us, saying: Abū al-Faraj al-Babbāghāʾ recited to us, saying: Abū Firās recited to us, and he wrote these to two servant boys of his while he was captive: "Do you two feel for me a tender companion, or a true friend? May God not preserve, O my two beloveds, a time whose vicissitudes have separated us with separation. I was your master, and I was but a benevolent father and a compassionate uncle. I spent the night weeping for you two; and it is strange that a captive should weep for one set free. So remember me—and how can you not remember me as long as a friend doubts a friend?" Among his admired poetry is his saying: "I have in you, from the excess of ardent love, one who commands, and short of you, from the beauty of self-restraint, one who restrains. Your chastity toward me is but the chastity of the God-fearing when he abstains from his pleasures while able. A noble ambition of the ʿAdawī lineage has dispelled anxiety from me, and a patient heart has surged against the turning of events. And a dark spear of what the spear-shafts produce, a supple one, and a white sword of what India makes, a cutting one. By your life, eyes do not benefit their owners if the sighted have no insight. How can glory be attained while the body is at ease, and how can glory be pursued while wealth is abundant?" And his: "Contentment of the soul for one who understands is better than wealth of money; and the excellence of people is in their souls, not excellence in outward state." And his: "Since I have been, I have been but compliant to my friends; taking brothers to task is not of my nature. If my friend's offense is not frequent, then where is the place of my kindness and forgiveness? He commits offenses against time, and I find his offense sweet, until I point to my pardon and kindness. He offends against me, and I am tender always and forever; nothing is better than one who is tender to an offender." And his: "The goal of passion is hard, and the easy of passion is rugged; and the hardest of what I have attempted is love and patience. You promise me with a promise while death is before it; if I die thirsty, may no rain fall. I appeared as a nomad while my family are settled, because I see that a home of which you are not of its people is desolate. What need have I for wealth, seeking its abundance, if honor is not abundant? Then let not wealth be abundant. It is death, so choose what raises your remembrance; a man does not die as long as remembrance is good. My companions said: Flight or death; I said: They are two matters, the sweeter of which is bitter. My people will remember me when their struggle grows serious, and in the dark night the full moon is missed. Had another filled what I filled, they would have been content with him; and gold would not be costly if brass were in demand. We are a people with no middle ground among us; for us is the forelock before all the worlds or the grave. Our souls are of little account to us in lofty matters; and whoever courts the beautiful woman, the bride-price does not make her too costly for him." He said, having heard the cooing of a dove while he was captive: "I say, when a dove cooed near me: O my neighbor, your state does not surpass my state. God forbid, I have not tasted the night-visitant of passion, nor have worries from you crossed my mind. Does a sad-hearted one's pinions carry him to a branch far in distance and high? Come, see a soul that is weak with me, wavering in a body that torments my mind. Does a captive laugh and a free one weep, and a sorrowful one keep silent and a carefree one lament? I was more entitled than you, in the eye, to tears, but my tears in misfortunes are dear." And his also: "In captivity there is a passion-stricken one whose tears pour onto the cheek. He resides among the Byzantines, but his heart is in Syria." And his also: "Lost is he whose passion is contained by a modest maiden, and humbled is he over whom dice decide. But I—and praise be to God—am resolute; I am mighty when necks are humbled to them. The beautiful woman does not possess my whole heart, even if tenderness and youth envelop her. I run, and do not give passion the slack of my rein; I incline, yet the right course is not hidden from me. In whom can a man trust in what befalls him? Far, far from the noble free man are companions. These people have become—except the fewest of them—wolves upon whose bodies are garments. I feigned heedlessness of my people, so they thought it foolishness; on the parting of our hair is gravel and dust. Had they known me as I truly am toward them, they would know that I witnessed while they were absent. To God I complain of our grief in dwellings where dogs have sway over their bodies. Would that you were sweet while life is bitter, and would that you were pleased while people are angry. Would that what is between me and you were flourishing, and between me and the worlds were ruin." 2712 - ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. Yazdād b. Maʿrūf, Abū Bakr the Ḥanbalī jurist, known as Ghulām al-Khallāl. He was born in the year 282 AH, and he narrated from Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah, Mūsā b. Hārūn, Abū Khalīfah al-Faḍl b. al-Ḥubāb, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, Muḥammad b. Muḥammad al-Bāghandī, al-Baghawī, Ibn Abī Dāwūd, Ibn Ṣāʿid, and others. He had many works according to the school of Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. From al-Qāḍī Abū Yaʿlā Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, who said: Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz had fine works, among them "al-Muqniʿ" of about a hundred parts, "Kitāb al-Shāfiʿī" of about two hundred parts, "Zād al-Musāfir," the book of "al-Khilāf maʿa al-Shāfiʿī," the book of "al-Qawlayn," and "Mukhtaṣar al-Ḥisbah." He also had others in exegesis and legal theory. Al-Qāḍī said: It reached me that ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said during his illness: "I shall remain with you until Friday." It was said to him: "May God heal you." He said: "I heard Abū Bakr al-Khallāl say: I heard Abū Bakr al-Marwadhī say: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal lived seventy-eight years and died on Friday, and was buried after the prayer. [And Abū Bakr al-Marwadhī lived seventy-eight years and died on Friday and was buried after the prayer.] I shall remain with you until Friday, and I am seventy-eight years old." When Friday came, he died and was buried after the prayer. That was on the tenth remaining of Shawwāl in the year 363 AH. Others said it was on the seventh remaining of Shawwāl. He was buried at Dār al-Fīl in the cemetery of Bāb al-Azaj. 2713 - ʿAlī b. Muḥammad, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Bustī. He was a skillful poet, aiming at parallelism and paronomasia in his poetry. The verses of his odes are few because of the paronomasia. I have selected from his entire dīwān admired verses and arranged them according to the letters of the alphabet; they are: "Leave me, for I will not wear out my brocade, and I will not show my need to people. My house preserves my rank, and my brocade honors my brocade." And his also: "O you who asks about my way, to follow in it my path: my path is justice and the suppression of passion; is there any satirist against my path?" And his also: "When you see farewell, be patient, and let distance not grieve you; await return soon, for the heart of farewell—they returned." And his also: "Meeting most of those you meet is burdens; so care not whether they turned away from you or visited. They have needs with you when they come to you; when they fulfill them, they move away from you or fly. Their morals—avoid them—are a shame; their nearness is a sin for a man or a disgrace. The filth of their morals infects their associate; it never departs; of old those they saw caused harm." And his also: "Leave me and my affair and my choice, for I know what I twist and what befits my affair. If a day passes me and I have not done a good deed and not gained knowledge, that is not of my life." And his also: "How many a sinner distressed me, and I joined him with pardon and forgiveness. How many an envier I endured, and I killed him with patience, patience." And his also: "If you serve kings, then wear of caution the most precious garment; enter upon them while blind, and leave when you leave while mute." And his also: "Leave me and my mark in my chastity, for I have made my chastity in my life my habit. Greater than the cutting of the two hands upon a youth is a favor of kindness he obtains from the hands of a base one." And his also: "O servant of the body, how you toil in its service to seek profit in what contains loss. Turn to the soul and perfect its virtues, for you are by the soul, not by the body, a human." And his also: "O gazer of the eye, say he gazes at my eye toward you one day; and do the steps of separation draw near? God knows that after your parting I am like a bird stripped of its two wings. If I could, I would ride the wind toward you, for my distance from you has bent my death." 2714 - Al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥusayn, Abū al-Faḍl al-Shīrāzī. He served as vizier to ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār b. Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn. He was unjust, so he was seized and killed in his prison in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year, at the age of fifty-nine. He was buried at the shrine of ʿAlī ﷺ. 2715 - ʿĪsā b. Mūsā b. Abī Muḥammad—whose name was Muḥammad b. al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh—Abū al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī. He was born in the year 280 AH. He heard Muḥammad b. Khalaf b. al-Marzubān and Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd, and he kept close to him for over twenty years. Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. ʿĪsā b. Mūsā said: "For thirty years I desired to share with the common people in eating the harīsah of the market, but I could not do so because of going early to hear ḥadīth."
