Translation

✧ Mention of al-Muʿizz’s possession of Damascus and the disturbances that occurred therein When al-Muʿizz learned of the Qarmaṭī’s defeat in Syria and his return to his own lands, he sent the commander Ẓālim b. Mawhib al-ʿUqaylī as governor over Damascus. He entered it, and his standing grew great, and his troops, wealth, and equipment became numerous, because Abū al-Munajjā and his son, the companions of the Qarmaṭī, were in Damascus, and with them a group of the Qarāmiṭa. Ẓālim seized them and imprisoned them, and took their wealth and all that they possessed. Then the commander Abū Maḥmūd, whom al-Muʿizz had dispatched in pursuit of the Qarāmiṭa, arrived at Damascus a few days after Ẓālim’s arrival there. Ẓālim went out to meet him, rejoicing at his coming, because he was apprehensive of the Qarmaṭī’s return against him. He asked him to encamp with his army outside Damascus, and he did so, and he handed over to him Abū al-Munajjā and his son and another man known as al-Nābulusī, who had fled from al-Ramla and had drawn near to the Qarmaṭī, and was also taken captive in Damascus. Abū Muḥammad carried them to Egypt. Abū al-Munajjā and his son were imprisoned, and it was said to al-Nābulusī: “Are you the one who said: ‘If I had ten arrows, I would shoot nine at the Maghāriba and one at the Byzantines’?” He confessed, so his skin was flayed, stuffed with straw, and he was crucified. When Abū Maḥmūd encamped outside Damascus, the hands of his followers extended into pillage, corruption, and highway robbery. The people became agitated and afraid. Then the ṣāḥib al-shurṭa seized a man from among the townspeople and killed him, so the mob and the young men rose against him and killed his followers. Ẓālim remained among the subjects, trying to appease them, while the villagers abandoned their villages because of the Maghāriba’s severe plundering of their wealth and their oppression of them. They entered the city. When it was the middle of Shawwāl of that year, a great disturbance occurred between Abū Maḥmūd’s army and the common people, and fierce fighting took place between the two parties. Ẓālim was with the common people, pretending that he sought reconciliation, but he did not openly oppose Abū Maḥmūd, and they separated. Then Abū Maḥmūd’s followers seized from the Ghūṭa a caravan from Ḥawrān and killed three men from it. Their people seized them and threw them into the mosque. The markets were closed and the people were afraid and wanted to fight, but their sensible men calmed them. Then the Maghāriba wanted to plunder Qayniya and al-Luʾluʾa. A cry went up among the townspeople, and they rushed out and fought the Maghāriba on the seventeenth of Dhū al-Qaʿda. Abū Maḥmūd mounted with his troops, and the people advanced against one another. The Maghāriba gained strength, and the common people fled to the city wall and held firm there. Those who had stayed behind came out to them, and the arrows against the Maghāriba became numerous and inflicted heavy losses on them. They retreated, and the common people pursued them and forced them to turn back. They turned back and charged the common people, who fled, and they pursued them to the city. Ẓālim came out from the palace of the emirate. The Maghāriba set fire to the city on the side of Bāb al-Farādīs and burned that area. The fire spread southward and burned much of the city, and many people perished in it, along with an incalculable amount of furnishings, baggage, and wealth. The people spent the night in the ugliest condition. Then they and Abū Maḥmūd made peace, but then they broke it, and they remained thus until Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of the year 364.
