Translation
✧ Mention of a stratagem of Bakhtiyār that turned against him Bakhtiyār had secretly agreed with his mother and brothers that if he wrote to them about seizing the Turks, they would make it appear that Bakhtiyār had died, and they would sit in mourning. Then when Subuktikīn came to them, they would seize him. So when Bakhtiyār seized the Turks, he wrote to them on the wings of birds, informing them of that. When they read the letters, wailing broke out in his house, and they spread the news of his death, thinking that Subuktikīn would come to them as soon as the news reached him. But when he heard the wailing, he sent someone to ask about the news, and they informed him. Then he sent someone to ask who had informed them and how the news had come to them, but they could find no reliable report to put the heart at ease, so he became suspicious. Then his messengers, the Turks, came to him with what had happened, so he knew that it was a trick against him. The Turks called on him to take command over them, but he hesitated. He sent to Abū Isḥāq b. Muʿizz al-Dawla, informing him that the situation between him and his brother had become corrupted and there was no hope of setting it right, and that he saw no alternative to obedience to his masters even if they mistreated him, and he called on him to conclude the matter in his favor. He presented his words to his mother, but she forbade him. When Subuktikīn saw that, he rode out among the Turks and besieged the house of Bakhtiyār for two days, then he burned it and entered it. He seized Abū Isḥāq and Abū Ṭāhir, the two sons of Muʿizz al-Dawla, and their mother and those with them. They asked him to allow them to go down to Wāsiṭ, and he did so. They went down, and al-Muṭīʿ lillāh went down with them on the water. Subuktikīn sent after him and brought him back and returned him to his house. That was on the ninth of Dhū al-Qaʿda. He took possession of all that belonged to Bakhtiyār in Baghdādh. The Turks lodged in the houses of the Daylamites and tracked down their wealth and took it. The common people of the Sunnis rose up supporting Subuktikīn because he followed the Sunnah, and he bestowed robes of honor on them and appointed for them ʿurafāʾ and commanders. They rose against the Shia and fought, and blood was shed between them. Al-Karkh was burned a second time, and the Sunnah prevailed over them.
