✧ Mention of the discord between Bakhtiyār and his companions In this year the discord between the Turks and the Daylamites began in al-Ahwāz, and it spread to the whole of Iraq and intensified. The reason for that was that ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār ran short of funds, and his soldiers became increasingly insolent toward him, disregarded his authority, and rioted, so that it became impossible for him to remain settled. His dīwān and his vizier found no source from which they could obtain anything by any stratagem. They had gone to al-Mawṣil for this reason, but nothing opened up for them. So they decided to go to al-Ahwāz and make a case against Bukhtikīn Āzādrūwayh, who was its governor, and fabricate a pretext by which they could take money from him and from others. Bakhtiyār and his army marched, while Subuktikīn al-Turkī stayed behind. When they reached al-Ahwāz, Bukhtikīn served Bakhtiyār and brought him a great amount of money, and offered him his obedience, while Bakhtiyār was thinking of a way to seize him. It happened that discord broke out between the Turks and the Daylamites. The reason was that one of the Daylamites lodged in a house in al-Ahwāz, and one of the Turks lodged near him. There was unbaked brick placed there, and the Daylamite’s servant wanted to build from it a manger for the animals, but the Turk’s servant prevented him. They fought, and each of the Turk and the Daylamite came out to support his servant. The Turk was too weak for him, so he mounted and sought help from the Turks. They rode against the Daylamites and took up arms. One of the commanders of the Turks was killed among them, and the Turks sought vengeance for their comrade and in return killed a commander from the Daylamites, and they went out into the town. He strove to calm the discord, but he could not do so. He consulted the Daylamites about what he should do—he was all ears, following every speaker. They advised him to arrest the chiefs of the Turks so that the lands would be cleared for him. They brought Āzādrūwayh and his secretary Sahl b. Bishr, and Sabāshā al-Khuwārazmī Baktījūr, who was the father-in-law of Subuktikīn. They came, and he detained them and put them in chains. He let the Daylamites loose upon the Turks, and they plundered their property and their mounts. Some were killed among them, and the Turks fled. Bakhtiyār took possession of the fiefs of Subuktikīn and seized them, and he ordered that it be proclaimed in al-Baṣrah that the blood of the Turks was lawful.
