Tarikh (al-Tabari) 4332

Then the year 363 AH began

✧ Then the year 363 AH began Mention of Bakhtiyār’s seizure of al-Mawṣil and what happened regarding that. In this year, in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Bakhtiyār marched to al-Mawṣil to take possession of it and its districts, and of what was in the hands of Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān. The reason for that was what we have mentioned of the departure of Ḥamdān b. Nāṣir al-Dawla b. Ḥamdān and his brother Ibrāhīm to Bakhtiyār, their seeking his protection, and their complaining to him about their brother Abū Taghlib. He promised them that he would support them, deliver their districts and wealth from him, and take vengeance for them. He was distracted from that by what he had been doing in al-Baṭīḥa and elsewhere. When he had finished all his engagements, Ḥamdān and Ibrāhīm renewed the discussion with him. Ḥamdān offered him abundant wealth, and the affair of his brother Abū Taghlib seemed small to him. He requested that he grant him his lands as a tax-farm, so that he would be under his obedience, carry the revenues to him, and pronounce the khuṭba in his name. Then the vizier Abū al-Faḍl made this seem good, and advised it, thinking that the revenues would become abundant for him, and that affairs would run smoothly under his control. Then Ibrāhīm b. Nāṣir al-Dawla fled from Bakhtiyār and returned to his brother Abū Taghlib. Bakhtiyār’s resolve to head for al-Mawṣil was thereby strengthened. Then he dismissed Abū al-Faḍl the vizier, and appointed Ibn Baqiyya as vizier. Abū Taghlib corresponded with him, but fell short in his address to him, so he incited Bakhtiyār against him and urged him to march against him. He departed from Baghdādh and reached al-Mawṣil on the nineteenth of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, and encamped at al-Dayr al-Aʿlā. Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān had departed from al-Mawṣil when Bakhtiyār drew near to him, and he headed for Sinjār. He broke the bridges and emptied al-Mawṣil of all provisions. He corresponded with the dīwān, then marched to Sinjār seeking Baghdādh. He did not attack anyone in its cultivated area; rather, he and his companions bought things at the fullest prices. When Bakhtiyār heard of that, he sent back his vizier Ibn Baqiyya and the chamberlain Subuktikīn to Baghdādh. Ibn Baqiyya entered Baghdādh, while Subuktikīn halted at Ḥarbā. Abū Taghlib had approached Baghdādh, and the ʿayyārūn and the wicked people rose up in it, in the western side, and a great strife occurred between the Sunnis and the Shīʿa. The people of the food market, who were Sunnis, mounted a woman on a camel and called her ʿĀʾisha, and some of them called themselves Ṭalḥa, and others al-Zubayr, and they fought (the other faction). They kept saying: We fight the followers of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭalḥa, and the like of this evil. The eastern side was safe, while the western side was afflicted. A group of the leaders of the ʿayyārūn was seized and killed, and the people became somewhat calm. As for Abū Taghlib, when he learned of Ibn Baqiyya’s entry into Baghdādh and the chamberlain Subuktikīn’s halt at Ḥarbā, he turned back from Baghdādh and encamped near it. A little skirmishing took place between them. Then they secretly agreed to pretend to be in disagreement until they could seize the caliph, the vizier, Bakhtiyār’s mother, and his family. When they had done that, Subuktikīn would move to Baghdādh, and Abū Taghlib would return to al-Mawṣil, so that he would attain from Bakhtiyār what he wanted and take control of his state. Then Subuktikīn feared a bad reputation, so he hesitated. The vizier Ibn Baqiyya marched to Subuktikīn and met with him. What had been between them was dissolved, and they exchanged messages about reconciliation, on the condition that Abū Taghlib would hold the lands as a tax-farm as they had been with him, and that he would grant Bakhtiyār three thousand kurrs of produce as compensation for the expenses of his campaign, and that he would restore to his brother Ḥamdān his properties and fiefs, except Māridīn. When they made peace, they sent word of that to Bakhtiyār, so that he would depart from al-Mawṣil, and Abū Taghlib would return to it, and Subuktikīn would enter Baghdādh, and Bakhtiyār would be delivered. When Bakhtiyār heard of Abū Taghlib’s proximity to him, he feared him, because most of his army had returned with Subuktikīn. The vizier Ibn Baqiyya asked Subuktikīn to go toward Bakhtiyār, but he was sluggish. Then he considered the consequences and marched reluctantly, and he revealed to the people what he had intended. As for Bakhtiyār, he gathered his companions while he was at al-Dayr al-Aʿlā. Abū Taghlib encamped at al-Ḥaṣbāʾ, (below al-Mawṣil), and between them was the width of the town. The people of al-Mawṣil sided with Abū Taghlib and showed their love for him because of the confiscations and seizure of wealth they had suffered from Bakhtiyār. People interceded between them for peace. Abū Taghlib asked Bakhtiyār that he be given a sultanic title, that his wife, Bakhtiyār’s daughter, be handed over to him, and that the fixed payment be reduced for him. Bakhtiyār agreed out of fear of him. They swore mutual oaths. Bakhtiyār departed from al-Mawṣil returning to Baghdādh. The people of al-Mawṣil showed joy at his departure, because he had treated them badly and wronged them. When Bakhtiyār reached al-Kuḥayl, he learned that Abū Taghlib had killed some men who had been among his followers and who had sought safety with Bakhtiyār. They had returned to al-Mawṣil to take their families and wealth there, and he killed them. When that reached him, it distressed him greatly. He stayed where he was and sent to the vizier Abū Ṭāhir b. Baqiyya and the chamberlain Subuktikīn, ordering them to come up to him. He had previously sent to them ordering them to halt, telling them that peace had been established. When he sent to them seeking them, they came up to him with the armies. They all returned (to al-Mawṣil) and encamped at al-Dayr al-Aʿlā at the end of Jumādā al-Ākhira. Abū Taghlib left it for Tall Yaʿfur. ʿIzz al-Dawla resolved to pursue him and seek him wherever he went. Abū Taghlib sent his secretary and companion Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Abī ʿAmr to ʿIzz al-Dawla, and he detained him, and with him detained Abū al-Ḥasan b. ʿUrs and Abū Aḥmad b. Ḥawqal. Messages continued to pass between them. Abū Taghlib swore that he had not known of the killing of those men. So peace returned and was established. He delivered to him the agreed sum of money. ʿIzz al-Dawla sent the sharīf Abū Aḥmad al-Mūsawī and the qāḍī Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and they administered the oath to Abū Taghlib. The peace was renewed. ʿIzz al-Dawla descended from al-Mawṣil on the seventeenth of Rajab, and Abū Taghlib returned to his country. When Bakhtiyār returned from al-Mawṣil, he prepared his daughter and sent her to Abū Taghlib. She remained with him until she was taken from him, and no news of her was known thereafter.
