Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2705 - Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Sakhtawayh b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū Isḥāq al-Muzakkī al-Naysābūrī. He heard in Naysābūr Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzaymah, Muḥammad b. Isḥāq al-Sarrāj, and others, and heard from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Ḥātim and others, and in Baghdad from Abū Ḥāmid al-Ḥaḍramī and his generation, and in the Hijaz from Abū ʿUbayd Allāh al-Jīzī and his peers, and in Sarakhs from Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Daghūlī and his contemporaries. He was trustworthy, reliable, prolific in performing Hajj. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Dāraquṭnī made selections (of hadith) from him in Baghdad, and the people wrote down much knowledge from his selection. He narrated large books. Ibrāhīm al-Muzakkī said: I spent a fortune of dinars on hadith. I arrived in Baghdad in the year sixteen to hear from Ibn Ṣāʿid, having with me fifty thousand dirhams as merchandise. I returned to Naysābūr with less than a third of it; I spent what went from it on the companions of hadith. From Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ, who said: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad al-Muzakkī was one of the devout, diligent worshippers, frequent pilgrim, and one who spent on scholars and the righteous. Dictation was held for him in Naysābūr in the year three hundred thirty-six, and he was black of head and beard. He was declared trustworthy in that year, and we used to count in his assembly fourteen hadith scholars, among them Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm. He died at Sawsanqīn on Wednesday night, the first of Shaʿbān, in the year three hundred sixty-two. His bier was carried, and we prayed over him, and he was buried in his house. He was sixty-seven years old on the day he died. Sawsanqīn is a place between Hamadhān and Sāwah. 2706 - Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿUmar b. Abī ʿUmar al-Qāḍī, Abū Muḥammad b. Abī al-Ḥusayn. Al-Rāḍī appointed him judge of the City of al-Manṣūr while he was young. Then al-Muttaqī succeeded, and he confirmed him in that post until Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year three hundred twenty-nine. Then he dismissed him, so he went to Iṣbahān and narrated from al-Baghawī and Ibn Ṣāʿid. He held the judgeship of Yazd, and died there. 2707 - Saʿīd b. al-Qāsim b. al-ʿAlāʾ b. Khālid, Abū ʿUmar al-Bardhaʿī. He came to Baghdad and narrated there from a group. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was one of the memorizers. He wrote from Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. Mandah and his generation. He died in this year. 2708 - Al-Sarī b. Aḥmad b. al-Sarī, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Kindī al-Raffāʾ al-Mawṣilī, the poet. He had fine concepts, and he was a master. He wrote eulogies for Sayf al-Dawlah and other princes of the Banū Ḥamdān. Between him and the Khālidī brothers, Abū Bakr and Abū ʿUthmān, Muḥammad and Saʿīd, there were many satires. They went to great lengths in harming him, and cut off his stipend from Sayf al-Dawlah and others. So he descended to Baghdad and praised the vizier Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī. The Khālidī brothers descended after him, entered upon al-Muhallabī, and slandered him (al-Sarī), and got themselves included among his boon companions, and made their constant refrain his slander. So his situation led to lack of sustenance, debt mounted upon him, and he died in Baghdad. 2709 - ʿAbd al-Malik b. al-Ḥasan b. Yūsuf, Abū ʿAmr al-Muʿaddil, known as Ibn al-Saqṭī. He heard Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, Yūsuf al-Qāḍī, Jaʿfar al-Firyābī, and al-Baghawī. Abū Nuʿaym al-Ḥāfiẓ and Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān narrated from him. He was trustworthy, and his testimony was always accepted by the judges. The people wrote from him according to the selection of al-Dāraquṭnī. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year, having reached eighty-five years. 2710 - Muḥammad b. Abī al-Ḥasan b. Kawthar b. ʿAlī, Abū Baḥr al-Barbahārī. He narrated from Muḥammad b. al-Faraj al-Azraq, Muḥammad b. Ghālib al-Timtām, Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, al-Bāghandī, al-Kudaymī, and others. Ibn Rizqawayh, al-Barqānī, and Abū Nuʿaym narrated from him. Al-Dāraquṭnī made selections from him and said: They confined themselves to the hadith of Abū Baḥr according to what I selected. He had a sound original and sound hearing, and a bad original, and he narrated from this and that, so he corrupted it. Abū Bakr al-Barqānī said: I heard from Abū Baḥr, and I was present with him one day when Ibn al-Sarkhasī said: I will show you that the shaykh is a liar. He said to Abū Baḥr: O shaykh, so-and-so son of so-and-so used to dwell in such-and-such a place; did you hear from him? Abū Baḥr said: Yes, I heard from him. Abū Bakr said: Ibn al-Sarkhasī had fabricated what he asked him about. From Abū Baḥr, who said: Abū al-Fatḥ b. Abī al-Fawāris reported from him in the Ṣaḥīḥ. I said to him! Likewise Abū Nuʿaym al-Ḥāfiẓ did. Abū Bakr said: Abū Baḥr is not worth a bone in my estimation. Then I heard him mention him another time and say: He was a liar. Ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: He was confused. Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Furāt said: In the last part of his life, objectionable things appeared from him, among them that he narrated from Yaḥyā b. Abī Ṭālib and ʿAbdūs al-Madāʾinī. Some companions of hadith took advantage of his heedlessness and confirmed that upon him. He had good originals, but he mixed that with other things, and heedlessness overcame him. He died in this year. In this year Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Saʿīd al-Mukharrimī al-Ṣūfī, the companion of al-Shiblī, died in Makkah. Among the notables who died in this year: Al-Qāḍī al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad, Abū ʿAlī al-Marwarūdhī. One of the shaykhs of the school of law in his time, and he has the famous commentary. He studied jurisprudence under Abū Bakr al-Qaffāl al-Marwazī. A group studied under him, among them al-Baghawī, the author of al-Tahdhīb, al-Tafsīr, Sharḥ al-Sunnah, al-Maṣābīḥ, and others. I have mentioned him in the Ṭabaqāt with what suffices. Ibn Khallikān said: When the Imām al-Ghazālī says: The Qāḍī said, he means this one. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
